  2. Background information The lesson is about two businesswomen, Josie and Alicia, who are coworkers of Pacific Rim Cruise in Vancouver. They are planning to have lunch at an Italian restaurant.

  3. Four main roles in the lesson: Alicia: I am a photographer. I take pictures for Pacific Rim Cruise. Josie: I am the excursion manager of Pacific Rim Cruise. Server: I work in the Panama Hat Restaurant. Cashier: I work in the Panama Hat Restaurant.

  4. Words you need to know: self-service: a restaurant where the customers have to serve themselves main dish: the main part of a meal at a restaurant set lunch: usually includes a main dish, a salad, a roll and butter, and a drink spaghetti: pasta in the form of long strings

  5. Conversation A:Going to a Business Lunch Josie: It’s 12:15. You’re meeting Mr. Jackson at two. Do you feel like some lunch? Alicia: Sure. Josie: What kind of food do you like? Alicia: Anything. It’s up to you. Josie: I usually go to an Italian place near here. It’s self-service, but the food is OK. Alicia: That’s fine. Let’s go there.

  6. A Cultural Note: Conversation A In Canada and America, because their immigrants come from different parts of the world, people are able to taste various flavors of food, for example, Italian, French, Chinese, Mexican, and Japanese food.

  7. Conversation B:Going to a Business Lunch Josie: Here’s a tray. It’s a set lunch. They have a choice of four main dishes, and you can choose a salad, a roll and butter, and a drink. Alicia: Thanks. Server: Hi, what can I get you? Alicia: Spaghetti, please. Josie: Seafood pizza for me. Server: Coming right up.

  8. A Cultural Note: Conversation B Enjoy your meal! Canadians and Americans don’t eat big lunches. Usually they bring their own lunches, such as sandwiches. Otherwise, they go to nearby restaurants to enjoy fast-food or set lunch. Customers choose a main dish; the salad, a roll and butter, and the drink come with the lunch.

  9. Conversation C:Going to a Business Lunch Cashier: Are those together? Josie: Yes. Cashier: That’s 17 dollars and 7 cents. Alicia: Let me pay …… Josie: No. This is on Pacific Rim Cruises. Alicia: OK. Thanks.

  10. A Cultural Note:Conversation C More often than not, Canadians and Americans pay their own bills; that is,they go Dutch. In business situations, sometimes the bill is on the company.
