  2. The Dairy Industry in India and its management • The Indian Dairy Industry accounts for a major portion of the economic and agricultural sector. Since 1998, India has the largest Bovine population across the world and holds the first position among the world’s milk-producing nations. The dairy industry in India is gradually revolutionizing the Indian economic sector. Recognizing this, NABARD is implementing various schemes to promote the production of clean milk, conserve good breeding stock by encouraging calf rearing, and bring structural alterations in milk production with respect to the geographical area. Overall, the government aims to focus on making technological advancements in the dairying industry and promote self-employment to specific sectors, in order to increase the overall milk production in quantity as well as quality. Considering the increasing demand and requirement for milk and other dairy products, It has become vital to ensure effective and an up to mark dairy management system in India.

  4. Milk production in India is for domestic purposes • Nearly all of the milk production in India is for domestic purposes, and the majority of it is sold as fluid milk. It is thus predominantly a major source of revenue in the global economy. The dairy market in India reached a value of Rs 10,527 billion in 2019, according to the latest report by IMARC Group, titled Dairy Industry in India 2020 Edition: Market Size, Growth, Prices, Segments, Cooperatives, Private Dairies, Procurement, and Distribution. • In a report, Edelweiss claims that “India’s dairy industry is worth Rs 5.4 trillion by value, having grown at 15 percent CAGR during 2010-16. Going ahead, the dairy industry is expected to maintain a 15 percent CAGR over 2016-20, and attain a value of Rs 9.4 trillion on rising consumerism,” India has progressed from being deficient in milk production at 20 million MT in 1970 to becoming the world’s largest milk producer at 160 million MT, accounting for 18.5 percent of global milk production. Moreover, according to the report, India is expected to emerge as the largest dairy producer by 2020.
