    2. Transport 21 – Why was this plan developed? Ireland’s growing economy put real pressure on existing networks Growing populations and expanding urban and commuter communities need improved transport links Need to plan for economic growth, and social cohesion, for future decades Infrastructure support required for National Spatial Strategy

    3. Transport 21 – How is it being delivered? The most extensive programme of investment ever in Ireland’s transport infrastructure Transport 21 runs for a decade, from 2006 to 2015 €34 billion is being invested over the lifetime of the plan A fundamental part of the National Development Plan (NDP) 2007-2013, which is investing €184 billion

    4. Transport 21 – What is being delivered? More roads, driving regional development and sustaining growth New, improved and reopened rail lines More trains and better trains, allowing new and improved services More buses and more services, improving commuter travel and linking communities

    5. Transport 21 – What are the key projects? National Roads Major Inter Urban routes (MIUs) linking Dublin to Waterford, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Border Atlantic Road Corridor Improved links to Northern Ireland Additional 850 kilometres of national primary and secondary roads Upgrade of the M50

Public Transport - Rail Extension of Luas network Construction of new Metro North and West Construction of DART interconnector New Intercity railcars, enhancing quality and service nationwide Commuter rail in Cork, Kildare, Navan Re-opening of Western Rail Corridor

    7. Transport 21- What are the key projects? Public Transport – Bus 60% increase in capacity on Dublin buses Additional provincial buses Enhanced existing services, new services and improved accessibility features Regional Airports Safety and security grants

Transport 21- Progress to date - National First MIU opened (M1 Dublin – Border) 86% of MIUs open or under construction Remainder through statutory approvals process 67 new rail carriages on Dublin-Cork line, hourly services on route Over 100 of 183 railcars for other Intercity routes delivered, in service on Dublin-Sligo, Dublin-Westport and Dublin-Limerick lines Dublin Docklands Station opened Portlaoise Traincare depot opened Additional buses for Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann

Transport 21- Key projects...for the West Bus Éireann New buses and coaches entering the Bus Éireann fleet under Transport 21 are enabling the company to upgrade bus services Bus Éireann has introduced 15 new vehicles into the Galway fleet in 2007 Another 16 vehicles will be introduced before the end of 2008 These are a combination of additional and replacement city buses, single deck commuter coaches, all of which are wheelchair accessible

Transport 21- Key projects...for the West Bus Éireann (continued) The introduction of 12 new low floor buses means that the Galway city fleet is 100% wheelchair accessible The first service improvement came into effect in July 2007 with the start of a new, high frequency service between Galway city and Doughiska - frequency of service was quadrupled to operate every 15 minutes As the fleet comes on stream, Bus Éireann will be improving timetables on city and commuter routes

Transport 21- Key projects...for the West Bus Éireann (continued) Higher frequency services are to be introduced on the Bothar an Choiste and Knocknacarra routes in 2008 and on other city routes in 2009  An improved frequency of service (e.g. every 30 minutes) is also planned on Commuter routes such as Moycullen, Claregalway and Gort 

    20. Transport 21- Key projects...for the West Iarnród Éireann A total of 1.6million passenger journeys were made on the Galway line in 2007 - an increase of 9% on 2006 Introduction of the Intercity Railcars on the route by this summer New railcars introduced on Dublin/Westport line

Transport 21- Key projects...for the West Iarnród Éireann (continued) Benefits to customers from new railcars will include: Significantly higher frequency and capacity on all InterCity routes Modern on-board comfort standards The replacement of outdated fleet across the network Improved accessibility for mobility-impaired customers Better reliability and performance, with integral engines in each carriage

Transport 21- Key projects...for the West Iarnród Éireann (continued) Western Rail Corridor development underway Direct rail services between Limerick and Galway will begin running in 2009 upon completion of the €106.5 million redevelopment of the Ennis-Athenry line Renewal of 36 miles of track Serve Limerick, Ennis, Athenry and Galway New stations at Sixmilebridge, Gort, Ardrahan, Craughwell and Oranmore

Transport 21- Key projects...for the West Iarnród Éireann (continued) Provide, with connections, a range of inter-regional services currently not available, through linking with Limerick-Dublin and Galway-Dublin services Promote balanced regional development, in line with National Spatial Strategy objectives, by linking two Gateways – Limerick and Galway – and serving the hub of Ennis
