  1. Understanding Pre-employment Screening

  2. Pre-employment screening is simply a procedure conducted for verification of the information provided by candidates upon application.

  3. It is also a method used for investigating the backgrounds of candidates, for example, the exactness and accuracy of the hopeful's claims and criminal or penalty records.

  4. Here are some of the documents that are verified in a pre-employment screening: • involvement in scrupulous activities • unspent criminal convictions relevant to the role • false identity or unsubstantiated claims in the application form • unexplained gaps in employment history, disadvantageous references • hidden or undocumented information related to the position being offered.

  5. As an employer, it is of great importance that you know by heart pre-employment screening. Be guided with certain laws which you will have to understand before conducting pre-employment screenings.

  6. Employee Polygraph Protection Act, a law which forbids most privately owned businesses from utilizing lie detector tests. • Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), managing the investigation of employers of applicants' credit history • Family Right to Privacy Act, a law which appeals for the consent of candidates so that employers may be granted access to information regarding their school records.
