  2. How we got the Bible Genesis 2:8 Chapter Verse Book • “Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there He put the manHe had formed.” • Genesis 2:8

  3. How we got the Bible Scientific Method: This only works for physical thingsthat are repeatable 1. Observation of an experiment 2. Measurement of that observation 3. Repetition of the experiment

  4. How we got the Bible Legal / Historical Method: This is used to determine truthfrom a non-repeatable event or experimentthatwas not observed. Beyond a reasonable doubt; not beyond any doubt 2. Where a preponderance of the evidence points to

  5. How we got the Bible 66 Books 39 in Old Testament 27 in New Testament 1600 years (1500 BC – 100 AD) 40 different authors Genesis is ‘Paradise Lost’Revelation is ‘Paradise Regained’ The Bible is the Story of Us

  6. Cannon Canon (Greek) = “measuringrod” • Canonization: how the books of the Bible were selected to be in the Bible

  7. How we got the Bible Three Steps to Canonization: InspirationbyGodThis is when God inspires certain peopleto write something.

  8. How we got the Bible Three Steps to Canonization: 2. RecognitionbythepeopleofGod Once God inspired people to write a ‘book’, men of God recognized it as a prophetic utterance from God. This recognition immediately followed a message’s publication. There is no evidence that any particular book of the Bible existed among the ancient Jews for many years before it was recognized as canonical.

  9. How we got the Bible Three Steps to Canonization: 2. Recognition by the people of God a) Moses’ writings were received immediately in his day. • Deuteronomy 31:26 b) Joshua’s book was immediately added to the canon. • Joshua 24:26

  10. How we got the Bible Three Steps to Canonization: 2. Recognition by the people of God c) Paul’s books were immediately recognized. 2nd Peter 3:15-16 d) As we’re studying the New Testament, we’ll see what specific steps people took to recognize if a book was from God.

  11. How we got the Bible • 1Inspiration by God • 2 Recognition by people of God • 3 Collection and preservation by the people of God The Old Testament canonwas in existence by about 400 BC.

  12. 1.The Bible claims to come from God through men of God, who wrote down the very words of God. • “For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” • 2 Peter 1:21 • “The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me; his word was on my tongue.” • 2nd Samuel 23:2

  13. 2.Who wrote the Bible? • The Bible was written by prophets of God “For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:21

  15. How we got the Bible 3.What do we mean when we say the Bible is “inspired”?2nd Timothy 3:16and Matthew 4:4 A. The Words, not just the ideas are inspired. 1. Sometimes God chose to emphasize even the verb tenses. “I am (not ‘was’) the God of Abraham” • Matthew 22:31-32

  16. How we got the Bible 3.What do we mean when we say the Bible is “inspired”?2nd Timothy 3:16and Matthew 4:4 A. The Words, not just the ideas are inspired. 2. Paul based his argument on a singular noun versus a plural noun in Galatians 3:16. “The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say ‘and to seeds’, meaning many people, but ‘and to your seed’, meaning one person, who is Christ.”

  17. How we got the Bible 3.What do we mean when we say the Bible is “inspired”?2nd Timothy 3:16and Matthew 4:4 A. The Words, not just the ideas are inspired. 3. Jesus went so far as to declare even parts of a letter are inspired. Matthew 5:18 “For verily I say unto you, ‘til heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no way pass fromthe law, until all be fulfilled’” ‘tittle’ i

  18. How we got the Bible 3.What do we mean when we say the Bible is “inspired”?2nd Timothy 3:16and Matthew 4:4 A. The Words, not just the ideas are inspired. 4. This doesn’t mean that God just used the writers as a ‘secretary’ where He just dictated words to them... 5. God allowed the writer’s personality and writing style to shine through. So, while the very words are inspired by God, the writer’s personality comes through. It’s not just dictation…

  19. How we got the Bible 3.What do we mean when we say the Bible is “inspired”?2nd Timothy 3:16and Matthew 4:4 A. The Words, not just the ideas are inspired. 6. This could be one reason why there are four different gospels. Each gospel is written by a different person, with a unique agenda… 7. This is why the writers often describe the same event from completely different perspectives. If their accounts were all the same, we might think they were guilty of ‘collusion’ (a secret agreement to deceive).

  20. How we got the Bible 3.What do we mean when we say the Bible is “inspired”?2nd Timothy 3:16and Matthew 4:4 B. All of the Bible is inspired; not just part of it. 1. All scripture is inspired. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is usefulfor teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2nd Timothy 3:16

  21. How we got the Bible 3.What do we mean when we say the Bible is “inspired”?2nd Timothy 3:16and Matthew 4:4 B. All of the Bible is inspired; not just part of it. 2. Jesus verified historical and scientific matters. a)Adam and Eve “Haven’t you read,” He replied, “that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female,” and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’” Matthew 19:4-5

  22. How we got the Bible 3.What do we mean when we say the Bible is “inspired”?2nd Timothy 3:16and Matthew 4:4 B. All of the Bible is inspired; not just part of it. 2. Jesus verified historical and scientific matters. b) The Flood “For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away.” Matthew 24:37-39

  23. How we got the Bible 3.What do we mean when we say the Bible is “inspired”?2nd Timothy 3:16and Matthew 4:4 B. All of the Bible is inspired; not just part of it. 2. Jesus verified historical and scientific matters. c)Jonah “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” Matthew 12:40

  25. How we got the Bible 3.What do we mean when we say the Bible is “inspired”?2nd Timothy 3:16and Matthew 4:4 C. Common misunderstandings... 1. The Bible uses ‘figures of speech’, like ‘hyperbole’ (exaggeration). “I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears.” Psalm 6:6

  26. How we got the Bible 3.What do we mean when we say the Bible is “inspired”?2nd Timothy 3:16and Matthew 4:4 C. Common misunderstandings... 2. The Bible uses ‘round numbers’. “But they fled before Israel, and David killed 7,000 of their charioteers and 40,000of their foot soldiers. He also killed Shophach, the commander of their army.” 1st Chronicles 19:18

  27. How we got the Bible 3.What do we mean when we say the Bible is “inspired”?2nd Timothy 3:16and Matthew 4:4 D. Summary... 1. The ORIGINAL text of the Bible (which we don’t have in our possession) does not contain errors; historical or otherwise.

  28. How we got the Bible 3.What do we mean when we say the Bible is “inspired”?2nd Timothy 3:16and Matthew 4:4 D. Summary... 2. There are some very minor copyist errors in the Bible manuscripts, but they are very rare, and don’t affect any doctrine at all. It’s been suggested that the Bible is 99.9% accurate; which is far more accurate than any other book of antiquity by a long shot.

  29. How we got the Bible Old Testament written between 1500 – 400 BC New Testamentwritten between 40 – 100 AD New Testament officially recognized 393 AD

  30. How we got the Bible 1.Was the book written by a prophet of God? “And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it… Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God, as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:19-21

  31. How we got the Bible 1. But, how do we know they are ‘prophets of God’? “…I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him… But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say… must be put to death.” Deuteronomy 18:18-20 There are other tests, but this is the main one

  32. How we got the Bible 2.Was the writer confirmed by ‘acts of God’? “We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away… God also testified to it by signs, wonders, and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will.” Hebrews 2:1-4

  33. How we got the Bible 3.Did the message tell the truth about God? “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel, which is really no gospel at all… But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned. As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!” Galatians 1:6-9

  34. How we got the Bible 4.Does the writing havethe transformative power of God? “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudesof the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 Also read Psalms 119:97-105

  35. How we got the Bible 5.Was it acceptedby the original people of God? “…just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other scriptures, to their own destruction.” 2 Peter 3:15-16

  36. How we got the Bible 5.Was it accepted by the original people of God? “For the Scripture says, ‘Do not muzzle the ox while it is treading out the grain,’ and ‘the worker deserves his wages.’” 1 Timothy 5:18

  37. How We Got the Bible 5.Was it acceptedby the original people of God? “And we also thank God continually because, when you receive the word of God, which you received from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.” 1 Thessalonians 2:13

  38. How We Got the Bible 6.Did the original apostles who knew of the alleged events have a chance to falsify ‘new’ writings? “We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnessesof His majesty.” 2 Peter 1:16

  39. How We Got the Bible 6.Did the original apostles who knew of the alleged events have a chance to falsify ‘new’ writings? “Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.” Luke 1:1-4

  40. How We Got the Bible 6.Did the original apostles who knew of the alleged events have a chance to falsify ‘new’ writings? “Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you were saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance; that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures...” 1st Corinthians 15:1-4

  41. Why wasn’t the New Testament recognized after 100 AD? 1.Communication and transportation was very poor in those days. 2.The Church was being discriminated against, persecutedand killed up until 313 AD. 3. There wasn’t a widespread need to ratify the New Testament until hereticschallenged it. The Church merely “discovered” or “recognized” what the Holy Spirit had already done.

  43. How We Got the Bible 6.Did people who knew about the alleged events of a ‘new writing’ have a chanceto falsify them? “Many have undertaken to draw up and account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you many know the certainty of the things you have been taught.” Luke 1:1-4

  44. How We Got the Bible 6.Did people who knew about the alleged events of a ‘new writing’ have a chanceto falsify them? “Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preachedto you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures...” 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
