There are so many such stories about brilliant kids dropping out of college, and then ending up as billionaires in their own business. While we get to hear such stories quite often, it is better to do a reality check and chalk down the facts if you want to embark on entrepreneurship journey without completing formal education. Here is a brief fact check on college dropouts and billionaire entrepreneurs. Survivorship Bias The fact is that most of the stories that you get to hear about billionaires who had somewhere dropped out of college studies. But, there are millions of unemployed college dropouts too, who don’t make to such levels that they can be talked about. So, naturally, they are not coming into the limelight. Statistics reveal that college dropouts have a very little chance of earning higher than their contemporaries. Educational Background Matters Steve Jobs dropped out of Reed College. Mukesh Ambani dropped out of Stanford University. Both withdrew from reputed colleges. So, the fact that they made it to these colleges itself speaks volumes about their ability and smartness. So, for starters, the level of hard work that they had to put in was much more than average. Connections, Grants and Access to Capital Needed Fellowship grants and good access to heavy capital is essential to have your business flowing. Someone who is dropping out with lesser connections may also face difficulties, especially if not possessing highly developed skills. Regardless of your business ideas, college completion helps to develop skills, resources and knowledge. Education gives a solid background in entrepreneurship. It would be advisable to continue your education or entrepreneurship courses parallel even if you have a great idea in mind.
