  2. Philemon • Appeal through Substitution • Treat Onesimus like he’s Paul 12, 17 • Paul takes any debt on him 18-19 • Onesimus gave what Philemon would like to have given 13 • Reminds us of Jesus taking on the penalty of sin for us

  3. Philemon • Appeal to Philemon’s Character • Love displayed through hospitality 5-7, 22 • Means of furthering the Gospel 2 Jn. 10-11, 3 Jn. 10, 5-6 • Same love should be extended toward Onesimus upon his repentance • Confidence in his Character 21

  4. Philemon • Appeal to practical: • 10-11 I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds: Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitableto thee and to me: • Forget the past (lazy, runaway, thief…) and accept the changed man (repentance)

  5. Philemon • Appeal to Free Will • Could command but begs instead 8-9 • How persuasive is such behavior? • Paul made a sacrifice in sending him back and now seeks Philemon’s gift 10-14 • Give the aged prisoner a reason for joy in this specific circumstance 20

  6. Philemon • Appeal to Providence • 15 For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever; • God works through our choices: Gen. 50:19-20 • We do not always know: Esther 4:14 • His brief departure has resulted in his eternal salvation (Accept the great result)

  7. Philemon • Appeal to Obligation • 18-19 If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account; I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides. • Paul converted Philemon to Christ

  8. All Volunteer Army • We accept Christ of our own free will • We choose to continue in service • Our elders should be willing 1 Pet. 5:2 • Our contributions should be given cheerfully and willingly 2 Cor. 8:12, 9:7 • (Web, sermon duplications, teaching classes, PWG, Tracts, Correspondence Courses…) • Face to face meeting coming: 22
