Somatic Cell Gene Therapy Somatic cell gene therapy is the deliberate introduction of genetic material into non-reproductive cells (somatic cells) of a developed human with the goal of expressing a gene to correct a genetic defect. More than 200 gene transfer therapeutic clinical trials have been undertaken on humans.

  6. Current Regulatory Status The Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee (RAC) considers applications for human somatic cell gene therapy clinical trials on a case by case basis. To date, no therapeutic application of somatic gene therapy has been approved by the FDA for commercial use.
