  1. ABP – Hadron Sources & Linacs R Scrivens ABP Group Meeting 19/06/2013

  2. Personnel

  3. REX ISOLDE • Excellent performance, with 15 new isotopes delivered including the lightest so far – 6He – and polarized 8Li. • Pear shaped nucleus discovered. • Study underway for an EBIS charge breeder with a higher electron current and voltage. Includes tests on a BNL high current gun design in Brookhaven. L. P. Gaffney, P. A. Butler, M. Scheck, A. B. Hayes, F. Wenander, et al, Nature.

  4. REX ISOLDE - future • Repair work and some tests for different EBIS cathodes. • HIE-ISOLDE is under construction, meaning no beam to “REX” until 2015! • TSR – Study is being made to bring this Heidelberg Storage ring to CERN (to be installed after HIE-ISOLDE).

  5. Linac4 - source • New source and extraction system was installed at the 3MeV test-stand. • Once recoupled to the DESY designed plasma generator, H- could be extracted at 45keV for the first time. • So new extraction system and pulsed HT shown to work even for very high electron currents.

  6. Linac4 - source • Cesiation of the new source to be commissioned at the test stand. • Second source to be made operational in the Linac4 tunnel.

  7. Linac4 – Beam Commissioning • Beam though the RFQ on 13/03/2013. • Validation of RFQ, diagnostics and chopping. 3 MeV beam slit-SEMgridemittance measurement First beam through the RFQ: 10mA H- accelerated at first shot Chopped beam Beam chopper tests Beam deflection on wire-scanner

  8. Linac4 – Beam Commissioning • Drift Tube LinacPermenantQuadrupoles up to 25 T/m – All now delivered to CERN. • Moveable test bench for beam measurements at 50 and 100 MeV has been defined. Includes emittance measurement with multiple profiles.

  9. Linac4 – Overall Planning

  10. Linac2+3 • Linac2 worked like a Swiss Watch. • Both Linacs serving p->Pb LHC run, L3 for Pb NA61. • Linac3 startup was very difficult, a lot of controls renovation lessons learned. • Linac3 has been tested with argon, NAr~6e9 / pulse ~ 10xNPb. • A lot of information e.g. neutrons produced in Linac3, Ar plasma aggressive in the source.

  11. Linac2+3 • Both Linacs now in LS1. Restart planning to be done. • Linac2 • New access system. • A lot of critical controls being renovated. • Instrumentation being changed for Linac4 versions. • New source controls to be implemented. • Restart of source in April 2014. • Linac3 • New stripper. • Low energy emittance measurement. • Restart beam in 2014 for a long Ar injector setup and physics run (into 2015).

  12. Its been a good year, and the last 6 months in particular have seen a lot of highlights -> thanks to great spirit and determination. • The low energy machines have produced new beams and new physics, and there are plenty of facilities to create. • Ion for BioLEIR • H- / p+ source for ELENA
