  2. WHERE ARE WE? • Moy Resource Centre is located in the centre of Moy village, in the grounds of Roxborough House.

  3. AREA COVERED • The Team provides services to visually and hearing impaired people who live in the Armagh and Dungannon District Council area.

WHY WE EXIST • Social Workers, under legislation have DUTIES and POWERS that give rise to PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY and ACCOUNTABILITY. • HPSS Order 1972 Articles 4a, 4b,15. • CSADP Act 1978 Section 1&2 • DP Act 1989 Section 4 • DDA 1995 Section 20(a), 21(b) • N I Act 1998 Section 75 Schedule 9 • Human Rights Act1998 Article 14

  14. DEAFNESS • Deafness is a generic term which covers a wide range of hearing loss • Deaf with a capital D denotes people who regard themselves as part of a linguistic cultural minority group. (Deaf people). • deafness with a lower case d is used when describing hearing loss in general. • Hard of Hearing denotes people with an acquired hearing loss.

  16. THEORY • ‘Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs.’ However, contrary to Maslow’s theory, the Deaf community formed as a result of an oppressive society, having achieved a strong sense of ‘belonging’ despite the fact that lower level needs may not have been met.

  18. 1. Hard of hearing people need to see you clearly

  19. 2. Face the light and the person at all times

  20. 3. Include hard of hearing people in your conversation. Let them know what you are talking about

  21. 4. Don’t hide your mouth, eg. Behind a newspaper

  22. 5. Talk directly to hard of hearing people

  23. 6. Speak clearly, not too fast and repeat if necessary

  24. 7. Don’t shout into the ear or hearing aid.

  25. 8.Tell hard of hearing people what you are laughing at.

  26. 9. Avoid unnecessary noise to get the persons attention before speaking
