  3. THE LETTER The letter was a cry for help. Turks were closing in on the Byzantine capital of Constantinople. Emperor Comnenus’ empire was in danger of falling to the Turks.

  4. THE LETTER Emperor Comnenus used religion, writing that the Holy Land was in jeopardy, to convince Europeans to help.
