Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative (GLSI) GLSI involves 80 teachers and 4100 students in 29 schools http://www.glstewardship.org/ Provide regional leadership/advocacy for place-based education about the Great Lakes. Implement the GLSI’s 3 key strategies in K–12 schools and communities Leverage resources

Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative Regional Hubs Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative (Western Upper Peninsula Center for Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education) Discovering PLACE (University of Michigan–Flint) GRAND Learning Network (Michigan State University) Grand Traverse Stewardship Initiative  (Grand Traverse Conservation District) Groundswell (Grand Valley State University) Northeast Michigan Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative (Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan) Southeast Michigan Stewardship Coalition (Eastern Michigan University) West Michigan Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative (Muskegon Area Intermediate School District) Hubs provide leadership, expertise, support and professional development for K–12 teachers, and material and financial resources for the collaborative work of students and community organizations in their local areas.

We Know GLSI Is Working When… Near-Term – GLSI hubs implement 3 strategies – Students study environmental issues in communities – Students have firsthand experiences in stewardship – School-community partnerships are created that are mutually beneficial Ultimately – Work is sustained over time – Participants are retained/increased – Other funds replace GLFT’s –

  9. GLSI Statewide Initiative Support the 8 hubs through: • Organizational development • Communications • Evaluation/Assessment • Networking and convenings • Access to national experts/resources

Accomplishments To Date The GLSI has: • Worked with more that 600 K—12 teachers in 185 schools across Michigan. • Of these, 344 teachers in 111 schools have developed place-based education efforts related to environmental stewardship • Enlisted 326 community partners to help students with their place-based stewardship experiences •Provided more than 25,000 students with place-based stewardship experiences
