  1. Matthew 11:28-29 “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (NKJV).

  2. 2 Thessalonians 1:5-7 “…Manifest evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer; since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels,” (NKJV).

  3. Rest For the Soul Rest is for the weary—only those who have labored receive rest. The Jews had days and years of rest for themselves, their servants, their animals, and land. Jesus promises rest for those who are “weary and heavy laden.”

  4. Rest For the Soul I. Rest During the Old Testament. God rested from His labor (Gen. 2:1-4). The Jews were commanded to keep a day of rest (Exod. 20:8-11). This was not kept before Moses (Neh. 9:13-14). It is not commanded in Christ (Col. 2:16-17). The Promised land was a type of rest (Ps. 95:7-11). There was another rest God still offers.

  5. Rest For the Soul II. Rest In the Book of Hebrews. The writer quotes this text (Heb. 3:7-12). We must not depart from God. They could not see Canaan because of unbelief (Heb. 3:13-19). The writer argues that the Psalmist points to another rest (Heb. 4:1-11). Heaven is this final rest (2 Thess. 1:7; Rev. 14:9-13).

  6. Rest For the Soul II. Who Will Receive This Rest? Those who will not enter His rest are… Those who do not believe (Heb. 3:12). Those who do not obey (Heb. 3:18). Those who worship the beast (Rev. 14:11). Those who will enter His rest are… Those who fear God (Heb. 4:1). Those who learn of Christ (Matt. 11:29). Those who die in Christ (Rev. 14:13).
