Purpose of Student organizations • Provide students with the opportunity to develop leadership, advocacy, and organizational skills • Strengthen the formal academic experience through co-curricular engagement • Provide students with the chance to pursue diverse interests • Serve as an important social network for students • Support the retention goals of the College by providing students with smaller communities in which to develop a sense of belonging

Characteristics of a good organization • Has a clear mission, sense of identity, and direction • Communicates effectively both within the organization and externally • Continually maintains strong, knowledgeable leadership • Stays committed to the organization’s shared values • Sets out to accomplish clear, measurable goals • Has a desire to continually evolve and create new visions to enhance the mission • Continually works to meet the needs of its membership and the community • Takes time to reflect on actions and reward itself for outstanding efforts

Benefits of being an advisor • Feeling of satisfaction, helping students learn and develop • Watching a group come together to obtain a common goal • Developing a personal relationship with students, that otherwise would not be possible • Furthering your personal goals by advising a group that shares your goals • Enhancing student’s experiences by sharing knowledge with them • Witnessing the growth of students through the organiztion • Having the opportunity to network with colleagues you may not otherwise have a chance to work with

Roles of an advisor • Resource-Knowledge about the College, the organization, and the various campus policies and procedures • Consultant-There to give advice and to challenge when appropriate • Mediator-Able to diffuse a situation, and able to have involved parties finding the middle ground • Mentor-Share your experiences, be an example, your students look up to you • Liaison-Bridge the gap between your organization and college administration, as well as connecting them with appropriate office departments

Typical Responsibilities of an advisor • Attend organization meetings and events on a regularly • Attend organization retreats • Support the organization in their endeavors • Be available in case of an emergency • Monitor financial accounts • Assist in developing realistic goals • Oversee the organization without making decisions for them • Give advice, suggestions, and challenge when appropriate

Getting started and setting expectations • Have a conversation with the organization about: • Your role and their expectations of you • Their role and your expectations of them • Read the organization’s constitution, get to know the members, attend events, make yourself known • Understand the responsibilities of each officer and member

Tips for success • Develop a strong relationship with the organization’s leadership • Be honest and open with all communication • Help them to see alternatives and provide an outside prospective • Remember: praise in public, criticize in private • Find balance between the overbearing advisor and the laissez-faire advisor • Be intention about your response to your students • Maintain a sense of humor and have fun! 
