  5. The Pervasive Web • The Pervasive Web is increasingly: • Pervasive in everything we do: • Teaching  Research  Administration • Social & personal • Pervasive across all groups: • IT Services  Library  MIS / Admin • Academic depts  Student activities • Pervasive everywhere: • PC Clusters  Offices  Halls of residence • Cybercafes  Mobile devices  Wireless devices This can lead to interesting challenges / conflicts as many different groups will want a piece of the action

  6. Addressing These Challenges • The Institutional Web Management Workshop series seek to address these challenges: Provide a forum for various groups: managers and techies, service (IT Services, Library, MIS, AVS) and academic departments, HE and FE, institutions and national bodies, teaching and research interests, etc. in order to: • get together and talk to each other • discover each others interests & concerns • learn from each other Mixing people from different sectors, organisations, departments and backgrounds is not without difficulties! To address this please explain terminology and acronyms - a glossary is in your delegate pack

  7. The Format • How do we provide a forum for dialogue: • The Parallel Sessions • Aim to provide an opportunity for delegates to actively participate through hands-on work, discussions, group exercises, etc. • Discussion Groups • Opportunity for (brief) free-ranging discussions on one of several topics • Follow-up Activities • Report on main issues from the discussion groups • Materials and reports from parallel sessions to be made available on Web site (if available) • Opportunity for follow-up activities: • Further events  Online activities  etc.

  8. Logistics • Administration provided by Organising Committee: Diane McDonald and David Miller (Strathclyde) and Brian Kelly, Sara Hassen, and Joanne Stone (UKOLN) • Greater range of sessions provided this year adds to the complexity, so please: • Ensure sessions finish and start on time • Don’t forget about the time needed to travel between sessions • Speak to an organiser if you have any questions

  9. Acknowledgments To Sponsors • This year’s workshop is sponsored by SITS (Strategic Information Technology Services) and Mediasurface • Note that: • Their financial contribution has helped to support the workshop’s social programme • SITS and Mediasurface will be talking about their products on Thursday morning • Mediasurface’s content management solution (as used at Northumbria University) enables staff to input their own content while at the same time present a unified front to the viewing public. • SITS IPP software enables you to publish your course, module or other information on the Web and includes facilities for Web site user self-registration, Web enquiries, Web applications, Web bookings and payments.
