Items that require external examiner approval: Approving Assessment Tasks • all assessments tasks (e.g. assignments, examination papers, presentations) External examiners need: • the relevant Module Definition Form (MDF) • the relevant Module Guide • the published marking scheme • indicative answers (where available) • sufficient time

  3. Approving Assessment Tasks Purpose: to comment on suitability of tasks with regard to level and academic standards and comparability with similar provision elsewhere The external examiner is therefore looking for: • evidence of appropriate academic standards • clarity • fairness • coverage

  4. All assessment methods which contribute 25% or more to the overall assessment of a module are moderated Moderating Assessed Work • sampling: minimum of 8 or 10%, whichever the greater; to cover range of performance and all locations of delivery • presented with agreed marks for all candidates at all locations of delivery – not a second or third marker • posting of work/attendance prior to meetings

Moderating Assessed Work • access to all work • moderation form • can propose, for individual assessment tasks, the moderation of all marks up, down or complete re-marking • cannot change individual marks • completion / signature of moderation form • External Examiner recommendation; DAP decision • additional assessment periods for international Associate Colleges

The Annual Report • submitted from July onwards directly to the Quality Assurance Unit (not to faculties and/or departments) e-mail: external.examiner@anglia.ac.uk • deadline of middle of September • circulated by the Quality Assurance Unit to relevant faculty and departmental staff • also read by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Director of Academic Office and Head of Quality Assurance Unit

The Annual Report • individual students should not be identified • comments in Section 6d of Tier 1 report and 3d of Tier 2 report submitted to the Senate • included as part of the annual monitoring process • written response to be provided within two months of receipt • published on intranet for student access part of contract; no report = no fee!

  10. The Annual Report • claim for fee and expenses made on form F15 • separate fee should be claimed for each duty • F15 sent to the Quality Assurance Unit ‘hard copy’ when the annual report is submitted • full completion of F15 facilitates prompt payment
