  1. Rough Drafts and Presentations Psyc 301: Week 13

  2. Today’s Lab • Sample Presentation • Learning how to present • Administrative issues • Proposal Draft Workshop

  3. R We Fooling Ourselves: Does the Occlusion Technique Shortchange R estimates? David Kidd Psych 301 Proposal Presentation

  4. Occlusion Technique • Occlusion technique is used to assess the visual demand of in-vehicle devices (Noy, Lemoine, Klachen, & Burns, 2004) • R index - ratio of glance time and total task time to estimate of resumability after an simulated glance away from the device • No task is present during the occlusion • May underestimate the cognitive demands and resumability of the device during driving

  5. The Proposed Study • Purpose: • To validate the occlusion technique as an estimation of visual demand • Hypothesis: • Occluding a task with a blank screen will overestimate resumability compared to occluding a task with a secondary task

  6. Methodology • 8 participants • 15 Experimental Trials • Simulated VCR programming • 2 Occlusion Types • Blank screen • Tracking task • Occlusion - 2 seconds • VCR task - 1.5 seconds

  7. Predicted Results • Resumability of the VCR task should be negatively affected by the tracking task occlusion • Supported: Current occlusion paradigm underestimates resumability • Not-Supported: Occlusion paradigm seems to accurately account for visual demand of driving and in-vehicle device

  8. Today’s Lab • Sample Presentation • Learning how to present • Administrative issues • Proposal Draft Workshop

  9. Presentation Tips • Look at the audience • Facial Expressions and Body Language are good • Confident tone of voice and good volume • Avoid wordy slides • DO NOT READ FROM THE SLIDES • Remember, you’re the expert on your topic!

  10. Today’s Lab • Sample Presentation • Learning how to present • Administrative issues • Proposal Draft Workshop

  11. Administrative-ness • I need the name of your instructor • Any issues? • Up-to-date grades available after class

  12. Today’s Lab • Sample Presentation • Learning how to present • Administrative issues • Proposal Draft Workshop

  13. Due Next Week • Final Proposal • 2 FINAL COPIES • Final Proposal Presentation • 5-6 minute presentation • EMAIL ME YOUR POWERPOINT BEFORE THE DAY OF CLASS • I will not be accepting PowerPoint presentations the morning of class

  14. Final Quiz • The last quiz will be next week • Fill out a quick evaluation for 5 of the presentations you listen to: • What was the topic of the proposal? • What was the hypothesis? • What was the method? • I’ll provide you with a form to fill out/turn in

  15. Proposal Workshop • Trade drafts with at least 2 other people in class and get their written feedback on the following: • Flow of the paper • Grammatical Issues • Organization of introduction • Clarity of the methodology • Do the same for two other people • You will have until 15 minutes left in the period to do this

  16. Teaching Evaluation
