  3. Veterans – State Approving Agency N. C. Department of Labor, Apprenticeship and Training Bureau is the State Approving Agency for Apprenticeship and OJT training. • Bureau approves training programs for eligible veterans to receive GI Bill education benefits while training in company in an Apprenticeship of OJT training program.

GI Bill and Apprenticeship • NCDOL is the State Approving Agency (SAA) for Apprenticeship and OJT • Training in over 800 occupations • Provides structured and supervised training plans • Eligible for monthly GI training allowance • “Earn as you learn” • Puts our veterans back into the workforce • Credentials received that are nationally recognized

  5. Earn Extra Money as you Train for a Job • Your GI Education benefits can be used for On-the-Job or Apprenticeship Training • If you are eligible to receive VA benefits for educational benefits, your are also eligible to use these benefits while training in Apprenticeship or OJT

What is Apprenticeship • Structured Skilled Training with an Employer from 1-5 years depending on the occupation • Occupation clearly identified and commonly recognized throughout the industry • Work Process “On-the-Job Training/Learning” learned in a practical way through systematic training program • Related Classroom Instruction – requires a minimum of 144 hours per year • Progressive Wage Scale included during term of training • State and National Credentials upon completion-both are nationally recognized

  8. What is OJT Training does not qualify as apprenticeship Short term training ranging from 6-24 months Training that leads to the acquisition of skills needed for a particular occupation Progressive Wage Scale during term of training Optional related instruction if needed

  9. REQUIREMENTS for Eligibility • Must be employed with a company full time • Company must have a registered apprenticeship or OJT training program • Veteran must be registered with the company as an apprentice or trainee • Veteran must not be fully trained or receiving fully trained rate of pay

Step by Step Procedure • You must have a job in which you need to be trained • Employer must contact and be approved by the SAA and have a registered program • Veteran must be eligible to receive GI Benefits • Veteran is paid regular training wages by employer • Veteran cannot already be trained/qualified for the job • Veteran cannot be making journeyman wages

First Steps • Obtain Veterans education benefit eligibility by contacting VA • VA will determine number of months the veteran is eligible to receive benefits • Veteran may use eligible months for college or apprenticeship training • College and universities are certified training sites also • A sponsor of a registered NCDOL approved program may be a certified training site

  12. Next Steps if Eligible If you are not employed • For assistance in obtaining employment contact the following in your area: • Employment Security Commission • Veteran’s Employment Representative (VER) • Job Link Center • You may also begin to apply with companies

Next Steps if Eligible After contacting NCDOL/Apprenticeship & Training • A local apprenticeship consultant in your area will schedule an appointment with the company to develop the training program, • Register the veteran as apprentice • Send completed paperwork to Raleigh-NCDOL, the State Approving Agency • NCDOL forwards approved program to VA

Beginning Career Path Research trades and skills info on-line @ www.umet-vets.dol.gov Military bases and Community College System Select apprenticeship as the career path for that trade Obtain employment with business or industry that employs the trade selected Determine if new employer has a registered apprenticeship program

Completion Certification • Upon successful completion of Apprenticeship or On the Job Training • Completion of performanced-based checklist for on the job training • Performance of proficiency in skills verified by Supervisor • Completion of all required classroom related instruction • Nationally recognized credentials received from NCDOL and USDOL
