  2. Warm-Up • Complete the post-group evaluation of the Shang Museum Exhibit. This is private and confidential and individual. Keep your responses covered as you fill out your evaluation. • Feel free to move to another place in the room for privacy.

  3. Gallery Crawl • You will enjoy a gallery crawl on the Shang Dynasty. View the many “artifacts” represented by your peers’ exhibits. • As you observe the Shang Dynasty artifacts, be able to answer this question… • What conclusion can be drawn about the Shang Dynasty? • Example – were they advanced or a basic agricultural society; rich or poor, equal or unequal; believe in higher powers or atheists (no god); educated or ignorant; concerned with all people or snotty; weak or powerful forces, organized military or poorly trained peasants,..etc…..

  5. What happened to the Shang Dynasty? Causes Effects The Zhou defeats the Shang by 1045 B.C.E. creating the Zhou Dynasty in China. • A military weakened by too many wars. • Why? • An economy weakened by excessive spending. • Why? • Corruption of the ruling class. • Why?

  6. Independent Activity - A The Shang Dynasty went from a large organized empire to being defeated by their own selfishness. Travel back in time to help organize the Shang Dynasty. What would you recommend to the Shang Dynasty to prevent their downfall? Are there any solutions to assist the Shang? Think about what caused the fall of the Shang Dynasty and provide a minimum of three solutions.

  7. Independent Activity - B The Shang Dynasty went from a large organized empire to being defeated by their own selfishness. The Zhou have now taken over the area the Shang ruled. Other Dynastyseventually followed the Zhou. As an advisor to the new king, you hope to keep your job, and your life. Recommend ways the Zhou can prevent the same fate as the Shang. Provide a minimum of three ways the Zhou can be successful and prevent collapsing.

  8. Independent Activity - C The Shang Dynasty went from a large organized empire to being defeated by their own selfishness. The U.S. is facing some difficult times also. The nation is divided between political parties – republicans and democrats. This December the Republicans and Democrats must agree on a plan to organize the economy. Democrats want to raise the taxes of the rich, while the Republicans want to cut more spending. If an agreement is not made the U.S. will face even more economic struggles. Some call this the Fiscal Cliff. The war in Afghanistan is slowing ending, and the U.S. just recently pulled out of the war in Iraq. Now the U.S. is worried about Syria using poisonous gases. They have told the Syrian government that severe consequences will follow if deadly gas is used. Also, terrorists are still trying to attack the U.S. Think back to what caused the collapse of the Shang Dynasty. Are there any similarities in this situation? Why or why not? What can the U.S. learn from the Shang’s mistakes? Provide a minimum of three ways the U.S. can positively learn from the Shang and prevent the collapse of the nation.
