  1. Genetic Technology Section 1 Applied Genetics

  2. Selective Breeding • Selective breeding is used to produce plant and animals with desired qualities. Read page 337 and list some examples of selective breeding.

  3. Inbreeding • Mating closely related individuals. • Offspring are homozygous for most traits. • Greater chance of seeing harmful recessive traits. • Uses include horse and dog breeding.

  4. Hybrids • Selectively breeding organisms with different traits produces hybrids. • Example: crossing a plant that produces a lot of fruit with one that is resistant to disease.

  5. Determining Genotype • Breeders must know the genotype of the organism that they are breeding to assure the best results. • Homozygous recessive individuals are easy to spot because the trait is expressed. • If an organism has a dominant phenotype, the breeder needs to know if the organism is homozygous or heterozygous.

  6. Test Cross • A test cross is used to find the genotype of a individual with a dominant phenotype. • Cross an individual with unknown genotype with an individual with known genotype. • The parent with known genotype is usually homozygous recessive. • Observe the offspring to determine the genotype of the parent.
