IDS Undergraduate Programs • IDS offers 4 Undergraduate Program Options: • Minor Concentration (18 credits) • Major Concentration (36 credits) • Honours Program (57 credits) • Joint Honours Program (36 credits) • Under the Multi-Track system students must complete at least one Major Concentration and one Minor Concentration in different units

  8. IDS Undergraduate Programs • Students doing the Honours Program must also complete Minor Concentration in a different unit • Joint Honours students can combine the IDS Joint Honours component with any other Joint Honours component offered in the Faculty of Arts

IDS Program Structure Suggested Schedule Breakdown U1 ECON 208, INTD 200 & Group A courses U2 ECON 313 & ECON 314 (note: ECON 314 not required for Minor Concentration) U3 INTD 497 (note: INTD 497 not required for Minor Concentration)& INTD 491 or INTD 492 (note: only required for Honours & Joint Honours Programs) • Group B complementary courses can be timed at the student's discretion • Students should plan their schedules carefully, especially if they are thinking about spending a semester or more away, and are strongly advised to see a program adviser before registering for courses

  11. IDS Program Renewal • IDS began as Minor in 1992. Since then, it has grown to become one of the largest programs in the Faculty of Arts • Such rapid success inevitably brings with it new challenges • Staffing of INTD 200 and INTD 497 • Supervision of internships and honours theses • The lack of new INTD courses • To Begin to Address these Concerns, an IDS Faculty Lecturer has been hired

Reconsidering what an IDS Program Represents • A Proposal to Create IDS Domains • Economic Development & Living Standards • States & Governance • Civil Society • Environment, Natural Resources & Agriculture • Exploration of greater collaboration with the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences IDS Program • Exploration of greater collaboration with the McGill School of the Environment

Finding an Academic Home for IDS CDAS has sponsored IDS informally for the past year A multi-disciplinary research centre contributing to an international dialogue on development issues through seminars, international conferences and a documentation center. Dedicated to creating new links between academia, policymakers and development practitioners.   14. Graduate Programs in IDS The New Development Studies Option (September 2008) Six Participating Departments: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science and Sociology. In addition to their disciplinary degree programs, students will take a new multi-disciplinary graduate seminar (INTD 657) and include a multidisciplinary dimension in their MA research. The goal is to provide graduates with a multi-disciplinary background through practice. Field Study Semester Programs • Some McGill Departments offer students a chance to put theory into practice through local regional, and international field study programs and individual courses • The Field Study Semesters are McGill courses taught on location, therefore students will receive McGill credit and any grades received will be included in the GPA and CGPA calculations

Arts Internship Office • Internships are a great way to explore career opportunities, establish valuable contacts, and obtain work experience • Students in IDS can seek internships, which will allow students to put their academic knowledge into practice in an organization in a developing or developed country that focuses on the problems of developing nations
