Cuban Missile Crisis -Soviets place missiles in Cuba – nuclear too -Oct. 1962 – U.S. receives photos as proof -U.S. spy planes get intelligence – Missiles are on bases and aimed at U.S. – ready to launch – could hit w/in min. -Kennedy demanded removal – Soviets start to position ships with more missiles as well – if U.S. is attacked than the USSR will be too

  11. Cuban Missile Crisis -U.S. blockades Cuba Keep Soviet ships from delivering more atomic weapons (and other weapons in general) -brink of war USSR backs down – Soviets remove missiles from Cuba for 1) no U.S. invasion of Cuba and 2) U.S. removes its missiles from Turkey

  12. Easing Tensions -Hotline established between leaders Phone line b/n the White House and the Kremlin – talk a.s.a.p. if a crisis arises -signed treaty banning nuclear testing above ground – Limited Test Ban Treaty – no testing in the atmosphere
