  2. Where does cas fit into the ib diploma?

  3. What is cas? • Creativity • arts and other experiences that involve creative thinking • Action • physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle • Service • an UNPAID and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit

  4. 4 criteria essential for cas • Purposeful activities • Personal challenge • Thoughtful consideration • Reflection

  5. How long does CAS need to occur? • 18 months-concurrency of learning • 1st day of junior year • 150 hours • Not necessary to hour count • Approximations can be used • Balance • A balance of hours needs to occur between the 3 components

  6. Do I need a portfolio? • YES! • Used to provide evidence of, and reflection about the CAS experience • Needs to address the 8 Learning Outcomes • May take many forms • Web blog • Binder • PowerPoint • Scrapbook • Videos • Must contain evidence/artifacts • Must contain reflections

  7. What are the 8 learning outcomes? • Increased awareness of my own strengths and weaknesses • Undertaken new challenges • Planned and initiated activities • Worked collaboratively with others • Shown perseverance and commitment in my activities • Engaged in issues of global importance • Considered the ethical implications of my actions • Developed new skills

What is a long-term project? • Students participate in a long-term project that spans over the course of two years. • The project must be something that the students plans and initiates. • Just volunteering for two years does not fulfill the requirements for the long-term project. • Projects can be completed with fellow students, IB and non-IB • Projects must contain at least 2 of the 3 CAS components. • The hours accumulated during the Long-term project are part of the 150 hour minimum.

  9. Is there anything that I cannot use for CAS? • Political volunteering • Religious proselytizing • Anything used toward the IB diploma • Example: ITGS project IB Music Performance • Anything that includes some form of payment.
