  2. POST NATAL CARE Care of newborn and mother after delivery It is responsibility of obstetrician and pediatrician which is called asperinatology. Care of mother – objectives To prevent complications of postpartum period. To provide care for rapid restoration of the mother to optimum health. To check adequacy of breast feeding. To provide family planning services. To provide basic health education to mother/ family.

Complications of postpartal period • Puerperal sepsis – is infection of genital tract with in 3 weeks after delivery. • Thrombophlebitis – is infection of leg veins frequently associated with varicose veins . • Secondary hemorrhage –bleeding from vagina anytime from 6 hours to 6 weeks • UTI , mastitis

  4. Restoration of mother to optimum health • Postnatal examination – twice a day during first 3 days then once a day till umbilical cord drops off . At the end of 6 weeks check up for involution of uterus. Further visits every month during first 6 months there after once in 2 – 3 months till end of 1 year . In rural areas 3-6 visits should be made . • Anemia • Nutrition • Postnatal exercises • Psychological factors- postpartum psychosis • Social – raise the child in good family atmosphere

  5. Breast feeding • Breast feeding for 2 years • Exclusive Breast feeding for 6 months • No bottle feeding • Complementary feeding at 6 months

  6. Family planning • Post partum sterilization is recommended on 2nd day after delivery • IUD and conventional contraceptives should be used during lactation

  7. Basic health education • Hygiene – personal and environmental • Immunization • Feeding for mother and infant • Birth registration • Importance of health check up
