  3. Introduction The Public Library is the cultural hub, physically and virtually, for a community; offering services and events that provide a communal gathering place for people who might feel otherwise disconnected. Perhaps this will be the most significant role of the library in the 21st century. Emerging technologies can help libraries fulfill that role.

  4. Creating an Emerging Tech CommitteeStarting from a Vision • Staff requests for Weblogs • New Virtual Library • Director’s vision: • More interactivity and online “Commons” • A team to explore and help teach staff about new technologies • Emerging Tech (E.T.) is born!

  5. Creating an Emerging Tech Committee Charge The charge of the Emerging Technologies (ET) committee is to explore new technology for possible incorporation into services offered by Tucson-Pima Public Library. The Committee will develop training sessions for service delivery utilizing new methods and write the policies and procedures for use on the Website. The Committee will design a mechanism for staff to suggest services which rely on or are dependent upon new technology and will be responsible for testing the technology for service delivery. The Committee will propose the use of technological advances to Library Administration either with system-wide or pilot applications. The Committee will self-evaluate annually.

  6. Creating an Emerging Tech CommitteePicking Your Team • Virtual Library staff PLUS • A wide variety of: • Service levels, i.e. librarians & library associates • Tech expertise levels, everyone has something to contribute • Public service experiences

  9. Knowing Your Environment Working With What You Have • Staff with technical skills: Utopia vs Reality • Web Designer • Web Programmer • Web Server Support • Culture of Permissiveness • Ability to try things, take time to learn, and make mistakes without negative consequences

  10. Knowing Your EnvironmentYour Governing Organization • Size • Larger may mean more restrictions or more freedom • Smaller may have less resources • Administration / Management • What procedures do you have to follow? • Public Opinion / Reputation • Remember those people who pay you? They’re important!

  11. Knowing Your EnvironmentPresenting New Ideas • Timing • System crashing? Governmental transition? Not a good time. Don’t learn the hard way. • Language • Know your audience • Use terminology that makes sense

  12. Knowing Your EnvironmentThe Everchanging Story • Shifting priorities • Act on what is a priority • Thinking ahead • Preparing for uncertainty • Visionary ideas vs. reality • Don’t be afraid to say no to your boss

  14. Defining the Terms Defining “Web 2.0” • Definition: “a second generation of the web that is focused on the ability for people to collaborate and share information online.” (webopedia.com) • Blogs, wikis, and community-based web services such as Flickr and LibraryThing are all seen as components of Web 2.0. • Not a new technology, it’s a new attitude.

  15. Defining the Terms Definitions • Library 2.0 “is a user-centered paradigm focusing on knowledge, experience, collaboration, the creation of new content and encouraging the heart.” (Michael Stephens) • “Library 2.0 is the natural evolution of library services to a level where the library user is in control of how and when she gets access to the services she needs and wants.” (Thomas Brevik)

  16. Defining the Terms Definitions • Library 2.0 is user-centered change. It is a model for library service that encourages constant and purposeful change, inviting user participation in the creation of both the physical and the virtual services they want... It also attempts to reach new users and better serve current ones through improved customer-driven offerings…While not required, technology can help libraries create a customer-driven, 2.0 environment… (Casey & Savastinuk, LJ, 9/1/06)
