Environment • Deserts on either side • Difficult to expand east – west • Difficult to invade • Yearly flooding • Predictable (that’s good) • Red land vs. Black land • Desert land vs. fertile land • Cataracts • Rapids that impede travel along Nile • Good climate for agriculture • Delta • Nature’s irrigation • No need for major public works projects early on
