  1. Psychometric Properties of the BDI: A Meta-analysis Beck et al. (1988) conducted a meta-analysis of studies involving the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) over 25-years (from 1961 to 1986) to determine the psychometric properties of the inventory. The meta-analysis calculated reliability and validity coefficients for psychiatric and non-psychiatric populations. Since the sample sizes varied between studies, a formula was used which gave weight according to the sample size. Contributor © POSbase 2005

Psychometric Properties of the BDI: A Meta-analysis • Tests of reliability included: • Internal Consistency: Calculation of reliability estimates such as Spearman-Brown and Kuder-Richardson. • Stability: The BDI was administered to the same participants on two occasions, where the time interval ranged from hours to weeks. These pre- and posttest scores were correlated to achieve a stability estimate. © POSbase 2005

Psychometric Properties of the BDI: A Meta-analysis From these results we can conclude that the BDI has reasonable psychometric properties: • High internal consistency, and reasonable stability over time • High concurrent validity with respect to other measures of depression, particularly in psychiatric samples. © POSbase 2005
