IRA: Background • Irish Republican Army • Descended from the Irish Republican Brotherhood that used guerilla warfare to fight British rule • Held a series of rebellions and campaigns. • Use secret societies to plot and organize rebellions. • Responsible for multiple terrorist bombings. • IRA Link

Bloody Sunday • January 30th, 1972 • Civil rights organizations held non-violent protests of the British governments discrimination of Catholics. • 26 unarmed civil-rights protesters were shot by soldiers of the British Army. • The public perceptions of the day boosted the status of, and recruitment into, the organizations like the IRA.

  4. The Troubles • Troubles were the relationship between the Protestant unionist and Catholic nationalist communities in Northern Ireland. • Three decades of violence between Northern Ireland's nationalist community (Catholic) and its unionist community (British and Protestant). • Civilians killed: 1,857 Total dead: 3,524

  5. The Taliban • An Islamic militant and political group that ruled Afghanistan from 1996 until 2001. • They enforced an extremely strict interpretation of Sharia law. • Massacred civilians, denied food supplies to 160,000 starving civilians, in order to scare Muslims into complying with their laws . • Scorched Earth Policy, they burned huge areas of fertile land and destroyed tens of thousands of homes.

Al-Qaeda Starting Out • Al-Qaeda started out around 1988 under Bin Laden. • First main task for Al-Qaeda was defeat the Soviet Union in Afghan. • They helped finance, recruit and transport thousands of troops to support and help fight for Afghan resistance. • In 1988, Al-Qaeda issued a statement that they wanted to kill U.S citizens and military and their allies everywhere.

  7. Al-Qaeda Current Goals • Current goal of Al-Qaeda is to establish a pan-Islamic Caliphate through out the world by working with other Islamic extremist groups to over throw regimes. • They carry out this plan through violent acts. • Preform most of attacks against western civilizations.

Notable Attacks • September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center and The Pentagon. • Killed approx. 3,000 people. • Devastated the United States • One of the main causes of the War on Terror. • Other Notable Al-Qaeda strikes… • May 12, 2003 car bombing attacks on residential compounds in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia • October 12, 2000 U.S.S Cole attack, preformed by Yemen, killing 17 crew members and 39 wounded

  10. Victims Reactions • Other countries took action on these attacks on their country with war. • Caused disputes between countries • Sept 11, 2001 seemed to bring U.S.A together as a nation • Death of Bin Laden brought joy to many. He was the face of Al-Qaeda.

Euskadi Ta Askatasuna • Euskadi Ta Askatasuna= ETA which means “Basque Homeland and Freedom” • ETA is a terrorist group located in Great Basque country and Paris • Started out in 1959 • Has evolved in to a group who’s goal is to promote Basque Culture. • Main targets are the governments of Spain and France.

  13. Notable attacks preformed by ETA • Assination if Spanish Prime Minister Luis Carrero Blanco. Occurred on December 20, 1973 • June 19, 1987: A car bomb kills 21 civilians in ETA's most lethal attack. • Over the course of the ETA organization it has accounted for over 800 deaths.

  14. ETA’s Current position • Current leader is Zuba • Most recent attack was October 20, 2011 • Have an estimated 200 members. • Mainly look to perform terror operations on political leaders, general public and influential people in the countries of Spain and France.
