  3. Why Does Conflict Occur? A conflict is a problem in a relationship. Conflicts are a normal part of life. However, when people do not deal with them, they might end up shouting at or not talking to one another. Conflicts can even lead to deliberate injuries, such as cuts and broken bones.

  4. Why Does Conflict Occur? (cont’d.) Different situations may lead to conflict: • Differing expectations • Differing values • Hurt feelings • Changing roles • Jealousy • Possessions • Struggle for power

  5. How to Prevent Conflict Practicing tolerance can prevent many conflicts. Using your communication skills can help clear up a misunderstanding before it builds up. If you sense a conflict in the making, try to make the situation less tense.

  6. How to Prevent Conflict (cont’d.) Keep conflicts from getting out of hand by responding to disrespectful behaviors in a healthy way: • Practice self-control by walking away and cooling off. • Ask yourself whether the issue is worth the conflict.
