  7. Beginningsof MAGIC • In mid 1994, still whenbuildingthe HEGRA telescopes, we understand thatthethresholdof an IACT dependsinversely on themirrorarea (and NOT assquarerootfromthe inverse area). Thatmeantonecanbuildvery large sizetelescopesof ~200m² mirrorarea (~15-20m Ø) providing ~20-times lowerthresholdof ~50GeV (HEGRA: ~10m², threshold ~1TeV) • The pioneeringworkofbuildingthe 17m Ø MAGIC was a difficulttask, weneedtoinvestplentyof time andefforts • Other colleaguesfrom HEGRA followedthepathofproventechnologies (stemingfrom HEGRA andfrom 10m Ø Whipple). Theybuilt H.E.S.S.. • Now, slightlyover 10 years after HEGRA, onecansaythatbothdecisionswereverysuccessfulandverymuchjustified! Razmik Mirzoyan: Recents Highlights of MAGIC

  8. MAGIC technologicalnovelties • It was impossibletosimplyup-scalethe ~4.2m diameter HEGRA telescopestotheaimed 17m diameter MAGIC • Forsuccessful „invasion“ into <100GeV domainweneededtodevelopandtestquitesomenumberofnewtechnologies • AMC system, all-Al diamondmilledmirrors • Light-weightmechanicalmountfromreinforced CF • Fast repositioningtoarbitraryposition in thesky (for „catching“ GRBs) • Super-bialkali PMTs, lowgain, VCSELs foroptical analog signaltransport, 2GSample/s FADC, sealed, T° controlledcamera, ultra-fast electro-optical design ofthetelescope,… Razmik Mirzoyan: Recents Highlights of MAGIC

  13. Mkn-421: Broadband SED Characterization and Modeling on 1-Day Timescales A two-zone SSC model with a quiescent and flaring blob describes the SED better than the (commonly used) one-zone SSC model Razmik Mirzoyan: Recents Highlights of MAGIC

  21. W51:SNR W51C interacts with molecular clouds in W51B The broad-band spectral energy distribution can be explained only (1-zone) with a hadronicmodel. Thisimplies proton acceleration ≥50TeV. This result, together with the morphology of the source, tentatively suggests that we are observing ongoing acceleration of ions in the interaction zone between the supernova remnant and the cloud. 30. MAGIC Upgrade Talk by D. Mazin, 1071, GA-IN01 • Started upgrade the MAGIC telescope in mid summer 2011 • Successfully finished in November 2012 • The aim was to use the same cameras, the same readout, providing stable operation for the next 5-7 years • Decrease dead-time down to 1%, enlarge trigger area of M1 and overlap of 2 telescopes, provide lower by ~(10%) threshold • M-I has got the next built-in in MPP camera (576 -> 1039 pixels) • Both telescopes are readout by using 2GSample/s DRS4 chips • New receiver boards, new trigger • Fully-automatic Sum-Trigger will be implemented in Sept. 2013 • We expect a trigger threshold of 25-30GeV with SUM-Trigger Razmik Mirzoyan: Recents Highlights of MAGIC

  32. Next 5-7 years • Planning to have smooth operation for the next 5-7 years • Software improvements should help to further enhance the current sensitivity • Next serious improvement of sensitivity is planned to happen with the installation of SUM-Trigger (fall 2013; currently under construction); threshold ~ 20-30 GeV • Performance of MAGIC was never as good as it is now • Successful source hunting and deep observation of diverse source types entered in its most sensitive phase Razmik Mirzoyan: Recents Highlights of MAGIC
