About St. Lawrence (SLU) Liberal Arts University Undergrad enrollment: 2,374 Located in Canton, NY Mission Statement: The mission of St. Lawrence University is to provide an inspiring and demanding undergraduate education in the liberal arts to students selected for their seriousness of purpose and intellectual promise.

  3. Office of Academic Services for Student with Special Needs (OSN) • 293 students registered in our office (’12-’13 Academic year) • Over 85% of these students have a documented learning disability • Majority of students with disabilities (SWD) use academic accommodations on a regular, semester-to-semester basis • Center for International and Intercultural Studies • (CIIS) • 274 students studied abroad (‘12-’13 Academic year) • 21 programs abroad • SLU run, provider programs, and exchange/direct enroll Office Demographics

  4. Why Collaborate? Realized that a population on campus was missing out on studying abroad (38% SWD study abroad) Recognized a need to provide better services for those who were Needed to streamline communication

  6. Research We surveyed 37 students to determine the impact of their disability as it related to: • Their decision to study abroad • The program they chose • The overall experience • The academic/cultural/social experience Follow up interview with students

  7. What We Learned In general, students do not base decisions on their disability Students did not feel their disability significantly impacted their experience Students tend to self-advocate We learned about each other’s fields

  8. Outcomes Presenting together at The International Conference on Higher Education and Disability Created a better line of communication between our offices Better advising throughout selection process More pre-departure follow-up with student and site director about accommodations Plan on giving evaluation every semester Continue working together to improve student experience
