  3. College… What do you know about college? What words come to mind when you think about college? How do you feel/what’s your opinion about college? How is college different from high school? Are you looking forward to going to college or are you hesitant? Why?

Community colleges offer trade and technical certifications as well as the first 2 years of a 4 year program. - Associate’s Degree College just offers a collection of degrees in one specific area. - Bachelor’s Degree A university is a collection of colleges: when you go to a university you are going to be graduating from one of their colleges, such as the business college. - Bachelor’s Degree

  8. The Truth About College Hard Work= Big Success Maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher for good academic standing. (varies) - Academic probation if falls below - Deans list= 3.5 or higher - School of Nursing= 2.75 Colleges can be big or small: classes can be 200 students or 20 students. Universities generally have bigger classrooms with more students. Professors can and will in most cases take the time to know you and your name. Student Loans

  9. Positive Aspects about College More Freedom = no parents! More flexible schedule = more time Chose classes = more interesting Fresh start = chance to change reputation Easy to meet new people Chance to get away from home & live in a different environment “The quality of a man's life is in direct proportion to his commitment to excellence, regardless of his chosen field of endeavor.” ~ Vince Lombardi

  10. Negative Aspects No parents/greater freedom = more responsibility Making new friends = leaving your comfort zone Grading is harder = work harder Assignments/tests count! Extra credit = rarely High School Teachers vs. Professors Class sizes can be daunting Peer pressure = difficult decisions Costs money & time “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.”  ~Attributed to both Andy McIntyre and Derek Bok

  11. Find What Interests YOU • Large variety of clubs & organizations • Sports, activities, committees, workshops • Extra time= join & meet people • List own interests, goals, hobbies • Involvement fest • Career • Career counselors • Workshops • Academic Handbook • Course Guide

Motivation/Responsibility/Freedom • Motivation • College success is more than academics • Set goals • Think positive • Responsibility • Developing relationships with professors, counselors, and peers • Ask questions • Set priorities – manage time correctly • Be prepared • Be persistent • Freedom • Becoming adult • Opening mind • Enjoyment • You’re not alone

  15. Networking Get yourself out there. Don’t waste time. Be bold. Questions. Practice. Smile. Stand out. A small effort goes a long way. A network can be an investment.
