Overview of McMaster University • Established in 1887 • 29,411 undergraduate and graduate students (Fall 2012) • Over the last five years total enrolment has increased by 11.9% • 1,300+ full-time faculty (92% hold PhDs) • McMaster’s faculty ranks have grown by 15% from 2004 to 2008, compared to 12% for G6 Institutions • 6 Faculties – Health Sciences, Engineering, Business, Humanities, Science, Social Sciences • 140 undergraduate degree programs; more than 100 Master’s and Phd. level programs • Students & faculty from 80+ countries • 75+ international exchange agreements • 147,000 alumni in over 140 countries

McMaster’s Research Enterprise • research income grew more than 340% over the last decade • ranked 6th among Canada’s top research universities with a research income of more than $325 million (Research Infosource Inc. 2012) • ranked 6th in Canada in research intensity, attracting $248,600 per full-time faculty member (Research Infosource Inc., 2012) • ranked 88th in The Times Higher World University Rankings 2012; #1 in Canada and 14th in the world for clinical and health • ranked 92nd in the Shanghai Jiao Tong Ranking of World Universities 2012 – one of only four Canadian universities in the Top 100 • The “McMaster Model” – a student-centred, problem-based interdisciplinary approach to learning – has been the adopted by universities around the world

Research Innovation McMaster Innovation Park • a premier 37 acre research, offers collaborative space for researchers and entrepreneurs alike to co-locate, connect and commercialize; a place to transform  ideas from vision to commercial opportunity; includes federal research lab (Canmet Materials Lab) and 80,000 square-foot, state -of-the-art McMaster Automotive Resource Centre (MARC) • MARC will house industry-scale labs, classrooms and equipment to prototype vehicles of the future. Both academic and industry organizations, from OEMs to parts suppliers to start-ups, will have access to MARC to pursue market-oriented research and development (26M project, will employ 120) Biointerfaces Institute • only one of its kind; 10,000 sq.ft facility is a testing lab for industrial partners and as a centerpiece for the development of biosensors and diagnostics to aid in commercialization of sensor technologies

International Partnerships in R&D – Future Requirements and the Usefulness of Networks • Information is the new global currency; efforts to innovate through R&D partnerships will hinge on how information is shared, utilized and leveraged • At McMaster, research talent is a central focus of efforts to enhance international R&D • People-centered model of innovation supports and encourages the mobility of students and researchers among universities worldwide • Industry a key component to partnership/networking structures, bringing knowledge and market-driven expertise into the innovation equation
