Housekeeping • I’m teaching DP class – room at Howell if you want to change • Breaks/Snacks protocol • Plan to live with uncertainty – can’t have the whole picture up front! • Norms • Respect everyone’s learning—questions, table talk • Be fully present (technology) • Cell phones on vibrate • No side conversations • On time • Tangents – not a hill • ALWAYS bring all handouts in a binder to class

Housekeeping • Reminder • Begin teaching your GRP case study group by next class – Thurs 11/29 • Revisit materials handout • Any last minute questions about materials? • Electronic Reflection Journal • separate reflections – 1 class, 1 reading • keep going on same document • will collect in Dec, March & May • Homework • Check it out before last minute! • Early Language and Literacy Certificate = a lot of early work!

  4. Homework Review • Article: Active From the Start • “Be careful not to establish a pattern where the child waits for the teacher to do the work. This is the point at which the child must learn that he must work at a difficulty, take some initiative, make some links. [This] is the general principle that needs to be established at this time…” (Clay) • What does this mean to you? • Look for examples in the article – italics portion

Foundational Ideas:Balanced Literacy • The success of balanced literacy depends on • including all the components in the literacy block • how the teacher creates instructional opportunities throughout the block in order to • activate background knowledge • integrate sources of information (M, S, V) • apply problem-solving strategies

  10. Foundational Ideas • GRP is one piece of the Reading Workshop • It replaces • Guided Reading • Includes individual conferences

Foundational Ideas • Guided Reading Plus is a two-dayformat, ideally back to back • Case Study Group will meet daily, but other groups could meet 2-4 days a week • Case Study: M,T & W, Th& F, M….. • Other groups: • M,T & W,Th or • M,T & Th, F etc. • Suggestion: STOP thinking about it as M-F, but as Day 1-5 – like specials

  16. Foundational Ideas • Pace is critical to effectiveness of GRP, so we have to learn to fit everything in to the lesson time frame • use a timer for each section! • when time is up, move on, finished or not

  17. Foundational Ideas • Establish routines for your GRP group • Entry routine • “Sit like a reader” • Book bags/folders/baskets • Use of whiteboards, markers, erasers • Magnetic letters organization

  18. Rituals & Routines • Think about the video we just watched. What rituals and routines had been established in that group? • Share at your table any rituals, routines or organizational structures that you have found to be effective with small groups
