  4. Length of Service Award Program • A small financial stipend, LOSAP is designed to retain and reward volunteers for their service to the community. What are they? • Lump sum benefit – Yearly and Monthly (after 10, 15 and 25 years of Service) • Death benefit - Accumulated funds paid to beneficiary. • Disability benefit - Accumulated funds may be distributed.   5. Bus Pass • All active members can receive a Ride-On pass with a digital photograph.

  6. Capital Bike Share • Using a special code, active members can get a membership for $25 a year compared to $85 thanks to their status as a Montgomery County Employee. Sign up here

  7. Tuition Assistance • Tuition assistance is funding that the County provides to help an active volunteer pay for education or training that the active volunteer chooses to take. Its purpose is to help you improve your performance and career potential. • These are done on a fiscal year basis (any course started within the fiscal year July 1 – June 30 must be presented for payment within that timeframe or it will be denied).   8. MSFA Scholarships The following scholarships are administered by the MSFA Scholarship Committee:a) "The MSFA Dr. John L. Bryan Scholarship Award," sponsored by this Association. The level of support is determined annually by the committee, based on availability of funds.b) "The Floyd B. Heimer Memorial Scholarship Award," sponsored by Mrs. Josephine G. Heimer. The current level of support is $2,000.00 per academic year, subject to change at the discretion of Mrs. Heimer.c) "The Shock Trauma Board of Visitors Scholarship Award," sponsored by the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center Board of Visitors. This will be awarded annually by the Scholarship Committee to worthy applicants in Emergency Medical Health Services Programs. Levels of support are determined annually by the committee. Funds available vary each year.d) "The Delmarva Power Scholarship Award," sponsored by Delmarva Power. The current level of support is $4,500.00 per academic year.e) “The Bill and Allica Olsen Scholarship Award”  

  9. Charles W. Riley Firefighter and Ambulance and Rescue Squad Member Scholarship Program • The Charles W. Riley Firefighter and Ambulance and Rescue Squad Member Scholarship Program encourages members of the fire-fighting, ambulance, and rescue organizations serving Maryland communities to pursue credited courses that lead to a degree in fire service technology, emergency medical technology, fire service management, or public safety administration with a minor or concentration in fire service technology or fire service management. • The annual award shall be at least 50% of the student’s actual annual tuition and mandatory fees at an eligible institution, but may not exceed the annual tuition and mandatory fees of a resident undergraduate student at the four-year public institution of higher education within the University System of Maryland, other than the University of Maryland University College and the University of Maryland, Baltimore, with the highest annual expenses for a full-time resident undergraduate for courses credited toward a degree in fire service technology, emergency medical technology, fire service management, or public safety administration with a minor or concentration in fire service technology or fire service management. https://mhec.maryland.gov/preparing/Pages/FinancialAid/ProgramDescriptions/prog_fire.aspx

  11. Recreation and Class discounts • Volunteers who are interested in obtaining individual discounts on Department of Recreation (DOR) sponsored classes or the use of gyms or pools, must complete a recreation application and forward the form directly to the Department of Recreation.

  13. “County Employee Hiring Preference” The County allows a Fire and Rescue Service merit system employee of a local fire and rescue department, or an active fire and rescue volunteer to apply for vacancy announcements that are limited to County employees only.  To be eligible, a fire and rescue volunteer must have achieved active status in the prior calendar year by accumulating at least 50 points under Code Section 2121(k), and the volunteer’s name must be transmitted to OHR on a master list compiled by the Fire and Rescue Service from certified lists of active volunteers prepared by the local fire and rescue departments. Maryland Income Tax Subtraction Program • Available to  a qualifying volunteer fire, rescue, or emergency medical services member for the purpose of this subtraction modification • Qualifies for active status during the taxable year; andWill have been an active member of a bona fide Maryland fire, rescue, or emergency medical services organization, an auxiliary organization of a bona fide Maryland volunteer fire, rescue, or emergency services organization, for at least 36 months during the last 10 calendar years by December 31 of the taxable year. • Currently a $4,500 deduction MORE INFO

  15. Maryland Student Loan Tax Credit Program The tax credit will be available to Maryland taxpayers who: 1.  File Maryland State Income Taxes for the tax year; 2.  Have incurred at least $20,000 undergraduate and/or graduate student loan debt;  3.  Have at least $5,000 in outstanding student loan debt remaining when applying for the tax credit; 4.   Have completed and submitted an application to the Maryland Higher Education Commission postmarked by September 15, 2018; and 5.   Have submitted all required graduate and/or undergraduate student loan information, including Maryland Income Tax Information and college transcripts.   17. SAFER Grant Benefits CJPVFD was recently awarded a SAFER Grant for Recruitment and Retention. This money will cover: • Mileage reimbursement for standby and attendance at classes; • Tuition reimbursement for all college level classes if enrolled; • Meal reimbursement for all meals at the station (both while riding and while training); • Ride Share / Public transportation reimbursement (Uber/Lyft or Metro/bus transit will be reimbursed if used for travel related to station activities or training)
