  2. Ice Breakers Know Your Neighbor 1. Separate into groups of five.  Ask each person to write down something interesting they have done or experienced. ( For example, I have been sky diving, I Ukrainian danced for 10 years, I love watching Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, My sister backed into my car last weekend, etc.) 2. Shuffle the papers. One person then takes the top paper and reads it out loud, then proceeds to guess whose experience is on that paper. Then the guessed person gives a “yes” or “no” answer. If they guess correctly the guessed person may briefly explain what happened (if desired) If incorrect its put back on the bottom of the pile. Than another person reads the next paper on the pile. It continues until every paper is gone.
  3. Ice Breakers Brain Teasers What is special about the number 8549176321? At a local restaurant, three friends, Mr. Green, Mr. Red and Mr. Blue, were having a drink. One man was wearing a red suit; one a green suit; and the other a blue suit. “Have you noticed,” said the man in the blue suit, “ that although our suits have colors corresponding to our names, not one of us is wearing a suit that matches our names?” Mr. Red looked at the other two and said, “You’re absolutely correct.” What color suit is each man wearing? What goes around the world but stays in the corner? *Excellent idea to get kids thinking ( pick riddles depending on the age category, for example an easier one for kids would be: What is an ancient invention still used today, that allows one to see through walls?)

  6. The Program The Summer Reading Program is supported by the TD Bank Financial Group. This program is designed to encourage children to visit their local libraries, participate in special activities and most importantly continue reading throughout the summer months. *Remember to be enthusiastic! Children will be motivated by enthusiastic individuals! Get Students to tell their friends to join!

  9. SPR Website www.td-club-td.ca One of the most important websites when it comes to planning your summer reading program. It contains a staff manual, images, craft, game and snack ideas!
  10. Planning a Program Find out what your budget is. Ask your Librarian Define target groups. Know the age groups. Set up a schedule. (example schedule?) Make a supply list of materials. What do you have on hand? What material you will need? Remember to keep track of statistics and complete evaluation forms (forms can be found on the website in the staff manual) Write a letter to the sponsor ( towards the end of summer have the students write a letter or make a card to TD Bank Financial Group or another businesses you get donations from, be sure to include pictures or drawings)
  11. Marketing and Promotion Know your audience! School Visits (contact local schools and spread the word in the classrooms) Hand posters throughout the community (Show Myrnam flyers) Public Service Announcements (Local newspaper, school newspaper, radio, etc.) Parades Word of mouth. Spread the word and tell everyone!
  12. Funding and Fundraising Know your budget and how much additional money will be needed. Find out if the programs are cost recovery or financed by the library budget. Keep track of expenses for next years budget. When asking for donations at businesses make sure to explain where the funds are going. Always send a thank-you card or letter!
  13. Registration Procedures Set a date. Talk to librarian. Will it be ongoing throughout the summer? Or a specific period Keep track of children's Health Care Number and Emergency Contact Waivers and Release Forms Keep Statistics and Reading logs
  14. Forms Unfortunately, the staff manual in the reading club website www.td-club-td.ca, will not have forms and templates ready until early June 2010. Keep checking!
  15. Programming Decorate the library. Make it interesting and use lots of colors! Provide prizes for contests Preschool Programs Ages 5-8 Ages 9-12 For All Ages! Encourage Adult Reading also!

  18. Times The morning sessions (am) start at 10am. However, the performers will be at your library an hour before to set up; someone will have to be there to help set up (8:45). The afternoon sessions (pm) start at 2:30 pm. The performers will arrive at your library at 1:00 or 1:15pm. They will also need a hand to set up.

  22. Sharing Session What are you planning to do for Jungle themed activities in your library? What age groups? Crafts? (Show Binoculars for Safari & Big and Small in the Jungle) Books? (The Jungle Book, Where The Wild Things Are, Meet Babar And His Family) Games? (Banana Relay Race, Obstacle Course) Activities? (homemade playdough & sculpt it!) Preparation is key! Lesson Plans!
  23. Easy Recipe Idea Strawberry-Banana Roll-Up 1 8-inch flour tortilla 2 T peanut butter 2 T Strawberry jelly (or your favorite) 1 Banana, peeled Place tortilla on a paper towel. Microwave 10 seconds. Spread with peanut butter. Then add strawberry jelly. Place the banana near the right edge of the tortilla. Fold up the ends of the tortilla. Then roll-up.

Playdough Recipe Ingredients: 2 cups flour, 2 cups warm water, 1 cup salt, 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil, 1 Tablespoon cream of tartar (optional for improved elasticity), food coloring & or Kool Aid drink mix. Directions: Mix all of the ingredients together, and stir in low heat (if a stove is not available make sure water is more on the hot side) . The dough will begin to thicken until it resembles mashed potatoes. When the dough pulls away from the sides and clumps in the center remove the pan from heat and allow the dough to cool enough to handle. IMPORTANT NOTE: if your playdough is still sticky, you simply need to cook it longer or add more hot water. Turn the dough out onto a clean counter or silicone mat, and knead vigorously until it becomes silky-smooth. Divide the dough into balls for coloring. Make a divot in the center of the ball, and drop some food coloring in (or Kool Aid mix). Fold the dough over, working the food color through the body of the playdough, trying to keep the raw dye away from your hands and the counter.
  25. Worms In Dirt Ingredients 1 16-ounce package Oreo type cookies 2 cups cold milk 1 package small JELL-O Chocolate Instant Pudding 1 tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP Whipped Topping , thawed slightly individual serving cups Gummy worms What you do: 1. CRUSH cookies in zipper-style plastic bag with rolling pin or in food processor. 2. POUR cold milk into large bowl. Add pudding mix. Beat with wire whisk 2 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes. Stir in whipped topping and 1/2 of the crushed cookies. 3. PLACE about 1 tablespoon crushed cookies into each cup. Fill cups about 3/4 full with pudding mixture. Top with remaining crushed cookies. 4. REFRIGERATE until ready to serve. Garnish with gummy worms just before serving. Yields about 8 servings

  27. Barrel Full of Monkeys Have the kids trace the kids trace the monkeys on colored paper. Cut out and place monkeys on the ground let the kids have fun trying to pick up all the monkeys!

Jungle Jeopardy Use a large display surface (can be a blank wall or whiteboard) 20 blank cards , markers, 1 pair of dice Create Jungle questions on the cards and place them on the board (for example: The Rainforest in Brazil is called the a) Amazon b) Sarawak c) Anaconda). Give each question certain points. Roll the dice to see what team goes first! Play the Jeopardy song on your IPod?
  29. Chopstick Relay Race Materials: Two pairs of chopsticks Two bananas Masking tape for start and end points To Do: Divide children into two teams and have them line up behind the starting point. When you say go one child from each team carries their banana with chopsticks to the other end and the next player goes. No hands. Chopsticks only. Winning team is the one who finishes the quickest. * To make it harder for older groups, have the kids go through an obstacle course with chopsticks and banana.

  32. The Teen Reading Club The Teen RC welcomes readers aged 13-18. The Teen Reading Club (formerly known as the Teen Summer Reading Club) allows teens to read books, post their own reviews and personal writing, participate in online chats, discuss books with peers from all over Canada, and win prizes for the reviews they submit.

  34. Teen Reading Program Training Sessions In the past TRC had set up training sessions with library staff and moderators but now has been cancelled. They now have decided to have self guided training.

Since none of the men are wearing the color of suit that corresponds to their names, and Mr. Red was replying to the man in the blue suit, it had to be Mr. Green whom he replied to. We know that Mr. Green is wearing a blue suit. Therefore, Mr. Red is wearing a green suit and Mr. Blue is wearing a red suit. A Stamp!

  40. Extra Time? Who Am I? Pick a player and put a famous person’s name on their back. The others can talk like that person, give clues, or act like the person. However, names of people are not allowed. The person with the name on their back tries to guess the famous person.
