Al-Qaeda “The Base” • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Agi0UUO4Jog • Established in 1988 by Osama bin Laden. • Goals: • Unite Muslims to fight the United States as a means to defeat Israel. • Overthrow “non-Islamic” regimes. • Expel Westerners and non-Muslims from Muslim countries. • Establishing a pan-Islamic caliphate throughout the world.

  3. Strength • Estimated to have several thousand extremists and associates worldwide. • Al-Qaeda serves as a focal point for a worldwide network that includes many Sunni Islamic extremist groups.

  6. Hamas: The Islamic resistance movement. • Formed in late 1987. • Goal: • Liberate Palestine from Israeli occupation. • Establish an Islamic Palestinian state in Israel. • Strength: • Official numbers of members are unknown, though there are tens of thousands of supporters and sympathizers.

  7. Location/Area of Operation • Hamas currently limits its terrorist operations to military and civilian targets in: • West Bank • Gaza Strip • Israel

Hezbollah: “Islamic Jihad for the liberation of Palestine” • Formed in 1982 as a response to the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. • Participated in Lebanon’s political system since 1992. • Goal: • Dedicated to liberating Jerusalem and eliminating Israel. • Formally advocated ultimate establishment of Islamic rule in Lebanon.
