  1. Powers and Exponents Chapter 1, Section 2 Pages 30-33

  2. The centered dots indicate multiplication. product exponent base Common factors Vocabulary

  3. What does it all mean? • Product- the answer to a multiplication problem. • Factors- two or more numbers that are multiplied together to form a product. • Exponent- tells how many times the base is used as a factor. • Base- the common factor • Powers- numbers expressed using exponents. The centered dots indicate multiplication. product exponent Common factors base

  4. Special math terms • Squared- to the second power or the base multiplied by itself • Cubed- to the third power or the based multiplied by three times

  5. Reading Math • First power • When a number does not have an exponent, it is understood to be 1. • Example: 8=81 • Zero power • Any number to the power of zero is equal to 1. • Example: 1000=1

  6. Evaluate- to find the value of Standard form- numbers written without exponents Exponential form- numbers written with exponents Example: exponential form To evaluate, multiply 4 by 4 by 4. Standard form is 64. Evaluating powers

  7. Write each power as a product of the same factor. 75 means seven is used as a factor five times, so 75 = 7. 7. 7. 7.7 Now you try these: 32 13 95 64 Now let’s try some!

  8. Let’s check • 32 = 3 . 3 • 13 = 1 . 1 . 1 • 95 = 9 . 9 . 9 . 9 . 9 • 64 = 6 . 6 . 6 . 6

  9. Evaluate each expression, or write in standard form. Example: 25 2 . 2 . 2 . 2 . 2 = 32 Try these. 5. 61 6. 90 7. 44 8. 112 More Practice

  10. Let’s check 5. 61 = 6 6. 90 = 1 7. 44 = 256 8. 112 = 1

  11. Write each product of in exponential form. Example: 9 . 9 . 9 . 9 . 9 . 9 . 9 . 9 =98 Try these. 9. 11 . 11 . 11 10. 32 . 32 11. 16 . 16 . 16 . 16 12. 8 . 8. 8 . 8 . 8 . 8 . 8 One more time

  12. Last time! 9. 11 . 11 . 11 means the same as 113 10. 32 . 32 means the same as 322 11. 16 . 16 . 16 . 16 means the same as 164 12. 8 . 8 . 8 . 8 . 8 . 8 . 8 means the same as 87

  13. Homework • Pages 32-33 in book • Assignment • 12-18 EVENS • 21, 22 • 26-32 EVENS • 41, 44 BE SURE TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS FOR ALL 12 PROBLEMS!
