Atlantic Coast SBE Alliance ODUM Institute The Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Statistical Institute Introduction to Data Analysis for the Social Sciences University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Manning Hall JULY 24 – 28, 2006 DESCRIPTION: The institute is designed to provide entering SBE PhD students with basic statistical concepts and data analysis to facilitate the transition into their respective social science disciplines. Statistical techniques, software and data manipulation will be presented. Additionally, there will be a variety of academic and social activities designed to promote inter-institutional student networking for future collaborations. At least five students from each AC Alliance school will be invited to participate. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation Atlantic Coast SBE Alliance Preparing Future Faculty Summer Institute Howard University Washington, DC June 21 – 24, 2006 DESCRIPTION: The PFF is designed to provide advanced doctoral students with intensive training and experiences to enhance their preparation for the professoriate. Sessions and workshops address topics such as the academic job search, learning outcomes assessment, writing a teaching philosophy, diverse teaching/learning strategies, professional networking, writing effective grant proposals, scholarship of teaching and learning, and teaching culturally diverse students. Institute participants will network with nationally known leaders in academic fields as well as with other doctoral students in their disciplines. At least six students from each AC Alliance school will be invited to participate.

Atlantic Coast SBE Alliance Undergraduate Summer Research Opportunities • SBE undergraduate students from AC Alliance Schools have preference for participating in the 10-week Summer Pre-Graduate Research Program at UNC-Chapel Hill. • Slots are available for up to 12 undergraduate students from AC Alliance schools • Further, the University of Miami, the University of Maryland at College Park, and Howard University have summer research programs as well in which AC Alliance school undergraduate students are encouraged to participate Sponsored by the National Science Foundation
