  2. The Known • We are preparing students to become registered nurses (RNs) • Nursing school is challenging • Students often unprepared for rigor of nursing program • Unfortunately, we have a higher-than-desired attrition rate

  3. The Unknown • How can we better prepare our students for nursing school? • What measures can we implement to decrease attrition and help our students to succeed while in the nursing program?

  4. Fostering Nursing Student Success • Collaborative efforts between nursing, counseling, and other departments have resulted in a number of successful initiatives

  5. Student Success Committee • Membership: nursing faculty from each block/program, counseling faculty member, Career Service manager, students • Discuss, plan, and implement strategies to promote student success • Implemented Strengths Quest assessment • Developed Mentor Buddy Program • Administer student surveys to block 1 students

  6. So You Want to Be A Nurse? • Collaborative effort between nursing, biology, advisement, and counseling departments • Offered every semester on main campus • http://www.gccaz.edu/biology/Nurse/tea.html

  7. Mentor Program • Students volunteer to mentor underclassmen throughout program • Feedback from students positive • feel more prepared for upcoming blocks • feel more connected to other classes • someone to share with who’s “been there”

  8. Courses • CPD 115 (Block I) • Study skills • Time management • Stress management • Textbook reading skills • CPD150AB (Block II) • Re-focus on study skills, time management, stress management and textbook reading skills • Critical thinking in reading, care plans, clinical and test-taking

  9. Critical Thinking Committee • New committee in nursing department • Membership: Trini Sandoval (chair), nursing faculty members, department chair • Share best practices for ideas to promote critical thinking in students at all levels
