  2. April Legislative Summary Spring Break Financial reform Nuclear proliferation Baseball starts

  3. White House • Export Control • Proposal to combine lists and agencies to streamline process • Attempt to classify items based on proliferation threat (no exports) and military uses (maybe exports) • Preliminary

  4. White House • Commerce Department Request for Information on Internet Policy • Asking for ways to help companies take better advantage of the internet • Looks like focus will be on reducing restrictions rather than imposing new limits • Very preliminary

  5. Energy & Aerospace • Energy Policy • Kerry / Graham / Lieberman Bill • Cap greenhouse gasses from utilities in 2012 • Cap stationary sources by 2016 • Greenhouse gas reductions thereafter • Still theoretical, but it has potential • Space Policy • Obama visit to NASA • Increased support for parts of President’s plan

  6. Legislative Update • K-12 education • Cosponsor list • 8 in House • 8 in Senate • Hill visits accelerating • Lots of work left to be done

Immigration • Comprehensive Bill • Might not be dead • Democrats appear to have decided to do something, starting in May. • We don’t know what • We don’t know if they are serious • IEEE-USA met with Competes America yesterday to work on a common green-card strategy • Model Bill • http://www.ieeeusa.org/policy/issues/Immigration/model-bill.asp

Legislative Update • Intellectual Property • Intellectual property bill is back on the fast-track … • Senate leadership wants it out of committee before Supreme Court hearings start • It is not clear when that will be • Stevens steps down at the end of this term, July 1 • We still don’t like the bill, but …. • Senate staffers are talking to us about changes
