  4. Jefferson’s Goals -wise & frugal government the support of state governments in all their rights reduce the power of the federal government

  5. Jefferson & the courts much of the bitterness between the Federalists & Republicans resulted from a fight over control of the federal courts

  6. Marbury v. Madison - John Marshall (chief justice) – extended the power of the court & broadened federal power at the expense of the states

  7. Marbury v. Madison Continued - established JUDICIAL REVIEW 1. Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land 2. When there is a conflict between the law & the constitution, the Constitution must be followed 3. The Judicial branch has a duty to uphold the Constitution

  8. Louisiana Purchase - In1803Jeffersonpurchased the Louisiana territory from France for $15 Million; DOUBLED the size of the U.S.

  9. Lewis & Clark - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark headed the expedition to explore The Louisiana Territory

  11. Lewis & Clark Continued -when the expedition returned in 1806, it had collected valuable info on people, plants, animals, & the geography of the West. The journey provided inspiration to a nation of people eager to move west
