  2. Who are the Wilson Tobs? • Located in Wilson, North Carolina • Summer Collegiate Baseball team • Staff includes… Owner GM Dir. Of Marketing Dir. Of ticket sales Dir. Of operations Dir. Of media relations 3 interns.

  3. The Conflict Parties Involved • General Manager (Was only titled Assistant GM during the 2012 season.) • Director of Media Relations Both employees were in their 1st season with the team. Office Conflict Example

  4. The Tipping Point • Season long conflict. • Team gathering at Buffalo Wild Wings. • GM goes to sit down and Dir. Of Media relations pulls out chair from underneath him.

  5. Relationship & Process Conflict • Relationship: Interpersonal Relationship issues The 2 parties had clashing personalities GM: Loud, Didn’t earn respect, Didn’t set good examples Dir. Of Media Relations: Quiet, Awkward, Held in feelings • Process: Problems with how the work gets done Asking others to do certain things you aren’t willing to do yourself Showing up late Refusing to perform tasks requested by the boss

Stage 1: Potential opposition or incompatibility • Communication Issues “The potential for conflict arises when either too little or too much communication takes place.” • Structure Issues “The potential for conflict is greatest when group members are younger and when turnover is high.” • Personal Variables I don’t like you. You don’t like me.

  8. Stage 2: Cognition and Personalization Perceived vs. Felt conflict Felt Conflict: Parties experience anxiety, tension, frustration, or hostility. Felt conflict = Real conflict

  9. Stage 3: IntentionsDecision is made to act • Competing • Collaborating • Avoiding • Accommodating • Compromising

  10. Stage 4: Behavior Conflict-Intensity Continuum • Minor disagreements or misunderstandings - YES • Overt questioning or challenging of others - YES • Assertive verbal attacks - NO • Threats and ultimatums - NO • Aggressive physical attacks - YES • Overt efforts to destroy the other party - NO

  11. Stage 5: Outcomes • Dysfunctional Outcome • Nothing positive came out of the conflict • Less communication than usual • Awkward work setting for other employees

  12. Resolution? • Conflict occurred with about 2 weeks left in season. • The 2 parties ignored each other for the remainder of the season. • Avoidance strategy was the best plan for everyone involved. • Dir. Of Media Relations will not return for 2013 season.
