Learning Objectives The objectives of this module are to: • Introduce the concept of Cyber Access • Promote government initiatives to bridge the digital divide • Provide information on how and where to access the Internet • Provide information on how people with disabilities can use technology • Demonstrate positive attitudes towards the use of technology

Learning Outcome By the end of the module, you are able to: • Explain the meaning of Cyber Access • Describe two government initiatives that have helped boost Cyber Access • Name three places where people can access the Internet • Identify two ways how people with disabilities can access the Internet • List three examples of ethical usage of technology

  4. What is Cyber Access ? • Access means “the ability to enter”, or “pass to or from a place”, or “to communicate with a person or thing”. • To go online and communicate and or to interact with others.

  5. How can we go online (Cyber Access) ? • We can go online in various ways; • Through a cable connection • Through a Wireless connection or WiFi • Using; • A PC • Laptop • Netbook • Tablet • Smart phone • PDA

  7. What is the Digital Divide • The difference between people who access the internet and use computers compared to those people who have no access and who don't use computers.

  8. The Digital Divide • The digital divide in measured using the following; • Infrastructure • Affordability • Knowledge • Quality • Usage

Answers • Cyber access is to connect to the internet, surf and communicate. • Communication is to interact with other people on the internet. • We connect using WiFi or a cable. • We can connect to the internet using Laptops, PCs, tablets, netbooks and lots more devices. • Digital divide is the difference between people who have technology and those who don’t. • A pupil in the UAE has laptops and PC’s at home and even tablets.

  11. How can we improve access ? • Making ICT services better. • Offering cheaper products. • Setting up more telecoms centres. • Tell people to buy more products which can access the internet.

  12. UAE The UAE is; • Providing fast internet access through Optic Fibre technology. • Optic Fibre will link up many people across the UAE together • Can watch digital TV channels

Internet and Disability • People with disabilities have a more difficult time trying to access information from the Internet. • People with such disabilities can be divided into four main types: • Motor impairments • Visual impairments or blindness • Language and cognitive disabilities • Hearing impairments or deafness

  14. Motor Disability • People who have problems using a mouse. • The buttons on the mouse are very small and can be hard to press. • Instead the use keyboard commands.

  15. Visual Impairment • People who cant see clearly or at all. • The text is made larger • Other objects on the screens are made bigger too. • Colour blind people cant see particular colours or bright colours. • Colours should be used in blacks and whites with differing contrast

  16. Language Impairment • People who have difficulty in understanding the language of a computer. • The layout of the software must be easy and same for every screen. • There can be a software to read out what is on the computer screen

Using Technology in the Right Way • Ethical Usage – This is using technology in the correct way • For example; • Not the use the internet for gambling and other forbidden things. • We should not do immoral activities on the internet. • We should not lie about information or the truth on the internet. • We should not abuse social networks. • We should respect other people views, race and religion. • We should not hack networks or spread viruses.
