Review T-P-S • Why did the girls like to gather in the kitchen with Tituba? • Why do you think this will be important to the story? • What is the setting of the book? • How does the author describe life back then? • How might the hazardous travel conditions affected relationships with neighbors?

  7. Partner read pgs 22-34 • How did Mr. Parris react to the news of witchcraft? What steps did he take to discover who was tormenting the girls? • How did the setting influence what the townspeople knew and thought about Sarah Osburn? (write) • On page 32, the author writes that “it was with a kind of fearful pride that they realized that their little village had been chosen to resist the great forces of darkness.” What does the author mean by “fearful pride”? What is she saying about the people of Salem Village? • Explain the sentence on page 33: “If they had not fortunately become bewitched just in time, they would all have been in very serious trouble.” Why “fortunately”? For whom was it fortunate?
