  2. Rivers • The syllabus is split clearly into two parts: • Firstly river processes and landforms • And secondly the interaction between people and ‘fluvial environments’ by which they mean rivers and what rivers do.

  3. River processes and landforms • River erosion, transport and deposition • How a river changes as it flows downstream • What are the following features, where on a river long profile are they found and how are they formed? Waterfalls/Gorges Meanders/ox bow lakes Levees/floodplains Deltas

People and rivers • Flooding: causes, effects and responses/management • You need to know a case study from an LEDC and one from a MEDC. • Flood management needs to include and understanding of soft and hard engineering; their (dis)advantages and why soft engineering is becoming more popular. Also why different groups of people would want the river managed in different ways

  5. Resources • Pages 17-25 in your revision guide • AQA exam papers and mark schemes. Rivers come in paper 1 higher tier….normally question 6 • BBC bitesize on rivers • S-cool on rivers

  6. Deltas – (see page 19 in your revision guide) • Deltas - Deltas occur where a river that carries a large amount of sediment meets a lake or the sea. This meeting causes the river to lose energy and drop the sediment it is carrying. Deltas form two types, called arcuate and birds foot. An arcuate delta is one, which builds out into the sea, extending the coast line, as the Nile Deltadoes in Egypt. A bird's foot delta is an extension of this as "fingers"of material form further off the edge of the delta. The delta of the Mississippi river shows these characteristics.
