  2. I、Introduction 1. When a person get lost in a strange place, he has to ask somebody for direction, on the other hand, when others ask you the way, you must express it clearly so that he can find the place. 2. Some useful signs are quite important in our daily life.

  3. II. Teaching tasks 1.Read and translate maps on the book, understand and remember the signs and places on them. 2.Learn some samples about asking for and giving directions. 3.Practice asking for and giving directions. 4.Remember some useful signs.

  7. Sample 1: Asking how to get to the manager’s office A: Excuse me,where is the manager’s office? ——asking direction B: The manager’s office? It is not on this floor. It is on the fourth floor downstairs. You can just walk down the stairs there. ——giving direction A: Would you please tell me how I can find his office? ——asking direction B: Sure. Go down the stairs to the fourth floor and turn left, at the end of the corridor, turn left again. ——giving direction A: Left, and left again. ——confirming direction B: It’s the second door on the right next to the meeting room. ——giving direction A: Thank you very much. ——expressing thanks

Take the lift to the filth floor and then turn left. It’s the second room on the right.——telling direction of the lift

  10. 1. Sentences for asking for directions Excuse me, can you tell me the way to…? Could you please tell me the way to …? Can you tell me where the…is? How can I get to …? Could you tell me which stop to get off at? Excuse me, where is …?

  11. 2. Sentences for giving directions It's just around the corner. Go straight ahead and turn left at the second crossing. Go on for about 100 meters. It's on your left side. You can't miss it. Go along the corridor and it's on your right side. Take the first turning on the left and walk straight. Just walk on until you get to Hill street, which is about three blocks from here. Go up the road to the third turning on the left.

  12. Walk 10 minutes/200 meters/two blocks and you’ll be there. Go up the road to the third turning on the left. Go down the street till the crossroads and turn left there. You will see it on the/your right. The shop will be on the right-hand side of the second block. It’s only 2 bus-stops. You may go there on foot. Take the lift or go upstairs to the third floor.

  13. Notes 1.The focal point of this section is asking for and giving directions. Between the two parts, the later one is more difficult. We should know usually there are several kinds of situations, namely, on foot, by car/bus, etc. The most important thing we should do is to remember the usual way to express them and accumulate such kind of sentences as many as possible. 2. In addition to speech, when somebody asks us the way, we can tell them the way by means of sign language. In this way, we can express it more clearly.

  14. Task 3 Practice asking for and giving directions. 1.Suppose you are a stranger in a city, you want to go to West Avenue, compose a short dialogue with your partner, asking how to get there,

  15. A: Excuse me, do you know West Avenue? B:West Avenue? Look, you see the Market Road over there? A: Yes. B: Well, you go all the way down Market Road pass the market, and turn left. West Avenue is the first turning on the right. A: Thank you very much! Task after class: Ask how to get somewhere in your city.

  16. 2. Suppose a person ask you how to get the nearest bank, tell him clearly.

  17. A: Excuse me, do you happen to know if there is a bank near here? B: Just a minute. Let me see, the nearest bank is on South Street. A: Is it possible to walk there? B: Yes, you go straight on till the crossroads, then turn left at the crossroads. You will see the bank across the street. A: Thanks. Task after class: Ask how to get a post office nearby.
