  1. Internet2 and NPS Don Brutzman, Tom Halwachs, Christine Cermak Naval Postgraduate School Monterey California 15 February 2002

  2. Topics • Description • Needs and opportunities • Benefits, costs, membership • Interested faculty and initial projects • Pipes and topologies • Strategic planning • Next steps

  3. Internet2 • “Internet2, led by over 190 U.S. universities working in partnership with industry and government, is developing and deploying advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet.” • http://www.internet2.org

  4. Internet2 • Internet2 is recreating the partnership among academia, industry and government that fostered today´s Internet in its infancy. • Primary goals: • Create a leading edge network capability for the national research community • Enable revolutionary Internet applications • Ensure the rapid transfer of new network services and applications to the broader Internet community

  5. Needs and opportunities • NPS researchers need to be affiliated with Internet2 for credible network research • Partnerships are necessary for state-of-art exposure and grounded research • NPS membership is valuable! • Financial and strategic investment

  6. Membership benefits • Five member activity areas • Applications, Middleware, Advanced Networking, Engineering, Partnerships • Regular meetings • Exposure to funded research opportunities • http://www.internet2.edu/html/faqs.html

  7. Membership costs • $25K annual membership fee for our institution • Code 05 will provide travel funding to attend Internet2, DREN meetings • Faculty, staff, students • Results reported back

  8. Membership steps and prerequisites • Letter of request and $25K annual dues • NPS must show commitment to strategic investment, as an institution • $500K annual expenditure in related technologies • We already do that! • I2 does not want dilettante/undecisive partners • I2 wants commitment to show high-performance technology actually works for partner institutions • Builds national business case for Internet2 progress This means strategic planning for NPS information technology.

  9. NPS strategic planning, I2/IT • NPS Information Technology Task Force • Charter: develop NPS IT strategic plan • Forum for discussion and peer review • Frequent meetings (2/month) • Intranet dissemination of inputs, discussion and recommendations • Regular reports to faculty council, SSPC, SSPG • Considering best mechanisms for input, outreach • NPS faculty, staff, students, tenant commands

  10. Internet2 initial endeavors:NPS faculty and interests • Don Brutzman, MOVES/IS • Scalable multicast, agent-based virtual environments • Alex Bordetsky, IS • Wireless/satellite/etc. networking for relief operations • Rex Buddenberg, IS • Internet to Sea: connecting to fleet, Net Centric NPS • Geoffrey Xie, CS • Intelligent Network Management • Cynthia Irvine, ISI/CS • Collaborative technologies, digital infrastructure security

  11. Forum • Open membership • Monthly meetings, minutes online • Mailing list internet2@nps.navy.mil • External web page, also intranet site if needed • Possible year 1 goal: produce video overview

  12. Topologies • Joining Internet2 not about pipes, per se • Our primary connection remains DREN, 45 Mbps • Defense Research and Engineering Network • We are actually “plugging” into national discussion on networking research and development • Essential for cross-network testing, experiments • Will exercise existing peering relationship • Internet2 backbone Abilene  DREN • http://www.ucaid.edu/abilenehttp://www.hpcmo.hpc.mil/Htdocs/DREN • NPS link upgrades likely to follow • Will explore further/faster connections (UC, etc.)

  13. Abilene connection map

  14. Abilene traffic map

  15. DREN connection map

  16. Upcoming initiatives for consideration by IT Task Force • Campus wireless networking • Improved security, draft policy, plan, results • Joe Roth LT USN thesis work • wireless@nps.navy.milhttp://intra.nps.navy.mil/wireless • Possible DoD exemplar, Internet2 aspects • Firewall/security protection, issues • nps.edu and nps.navy.mil domains • Need administrative, routing flexibility for research • Several NPS, NMCI needs and capability matches to be explored • Factor: NPS information infrastructure support • Our Internet2 efforts will proceed as supportable by campus

  17. IT strategic planning and potential of Internet2 for NPS • Not merely the minimum scope, e.g. Internet2 initiatives are compatible with campus IT plans • Expectation: Internet2-related activity is fundamentally important driver for campus IT development • Position NPS as leader • “big networking” connected to actual users • for Navy, DoD and (perhaps) government

  18. Internet2 outreach video • [We viewed 5-minute promo video] • Wow! • Great vision linking strategic execution to technology drivers • Why doesn’t NPS make one of these?

  19. Next steps • Administrative • Letter and dues • Quicklook of institutional commitment • Intent to perform cross-campus strategic planning and assessment • Strategic • NPS decision-making process • Strategic planning process

  20. Comments and questions? • Discussion: $25K fee and other steps • Discussion: opportunity costs/gains regarding membership • Establish reasonable expectations on campus about what Internet2 entails • Investigate educational component • Distance learning • Other areas?

  21. Comments and questions 2 • Affiliate membership? • Different membership class, not applicable to NPS • “Affiliate membership in Internet2 is open to not-for-profit corporations organized and operated for research or education purposes that do not qualify for Regular or Corporate membership, but wish to participate in Internet2.” • http://www.internet2.edu/members/html/affiliaterequirements.html • Can NPS maintain annual strategic/research investments related to Internet2 above $500K? • Yes, easily

  22. Comments and questions 3 • Resourcing: variety of impacts and implications will be reported back • Fundamental part of campus strategic planning • Needs to be normalized and on a regular annual schedule for review, requests, repeated execution • Enterprise resource planning (ERP) relationships? • Who is working on this? • Right time of year to pay? • No Internet2 preferences or requirements • Followup with Megan Reilly

  23. Comments and questions 4 • NPS funding model issues • Direct funding/indirect funding/incentives for annual costs related to Internet2 [Barry Frew] • Possible downsides • Wideband issues? [Barry Frew] • No others noted • “Report-back” follow-ups to SSPC/SSPG • Internet2 application-area meeting (if happens first) • Internet2 member meeting May 6-8, Arlington http://www.internet2.edu/activities/html/spring_02.html
