  1. Hypoxia, AnoxiaandDrowning

  2. We will cover • Hypoxia/Anoxia • Treatment • Mechanism of Drowning • Treatment • Summary

  3. Description • Anoxia • Total lack of oxygen • Hypoxia • Varying degrees of oxygen deficiency

  4. Causes • Air entry to lungs impeded • Diseases affecting lungs • Reduced haemoglobin content • Heart Disease

  5. Other Causes • External Pressure • Narrowing of respiratory passages • Inhalation of smoke • Deprivation of oxygen • Hyperventilation • Long snorkel dives • Equipment malfunction • Out-of-Air

  6. Treatment • Remove from cause • Airway (A) • Breathing (B) • Circulation (C)

  7. Drowning • Sudden severe asphyxia • Complicated by water • Lower body temperature • Inhalation of water

  8. Types • Fresh Water Drowning • Salt Water Drowning • Dry Drowning

  9. Fresh Water Drowning • Water enters bloodstream causing Haemodilution • Affects balance of blood chemicals • Cardiac arrest

  10. Salt Water Drowning • Fluid is drawn from bloodstream causing Haemoconcentration • Lowers blood volume • Cardiac arrest • Chances of resuscitation may be better with this type of drowning

  11. Dry Drowning • Involuntary spasm closes off pharynx • No water enters the lungs • Results in hypoxia • Unconsciousness

  12. Treatment • Remove victim from water • If necessary commence EAR with victim still on surface of water • Administer 100% Oxygen • Give C.P.R. if necessary • Treat for shock • Remove to hospital in all cases • Acquaint medical personnel with details of submersion e.g. type and duration • Secondary Drowning

  13. Summary • Hypoxia/Anoxia • Treatment • Mechanism of Drowning • Treatment

  14. Questions

  15. Hypoxia is • Resuscitation from drowning • Total lack of oxygen • Partial lack of oxygen

  16. Hypoxia is • Resuscitation from drowning • Total lack of oxygen • Partial lack of oxygen

  17. Irreparable brain damage will occur if the brain is deprived of oxygen for : • 1 minute • 3 minutes • 5 minutes • 7 minutes

  18. Irreparable brain damage will occur if the brain is deprived of oxygen for : • 1 minute • 3 minutes • 5 minutes • 7 minutes

  19. Fresh water drowning : • Will dilute the blood • Will cause lower blood volume • Will concentrate the blood

  20. Fresh water drowning : • Will dilute the blood • Will cause lower blood volume • Will concentrate the blood

  21. Asphyxia is • Failure to supply fresh oxygen • Lack of respiration sufficient to clear carbon dioxide • Both of the above

  22. Asphyxia is • Failure to supply fresh oxygen • Lack of respiration sufficient to clear carbon dioxide • Both of the above

  23. Hyperventilation may be a cause of • Burst lung • Hypoxia • Obstruction in the airway
