  1. Does Turbulence Impact Particle Orientation or Habit? (or what else does?) Matthew Shupe University of Colorado 6 February 2012, Steamboat Springs, CO

  2. A First Example • General Structure: “Stratiform” mixed-phase cloud layer. Ttop = -20C

  3. Angular dependence of depol ratio Metric that I am using is the difference between SLDR at 90 degrees and 45 degrees

  4. Transitions in Turbulence and in Angular-Dependence of SLDR Transition from high to low turbulence near cloud top Transition in SLDR angular dependence

  5. Similar increase on CPC (SPL) and CCN (CP) Other Transitions Slow/small increase in RH at SPL but larger decrease at THD and CP At 17Z wind direction at CP changed from SW to E Soundings (15, 22Z) show W-NW at cloud level. -20 C transition to -16 C at SPL Sunrise

  6. Another Example • General Structure: Mixed-phase cloud layer. Ttop = -18 to -10C ??????

  7. Transition from relatively low to high turbulence Transition in SLDR angular dependence

  8. Decrease cloud base near time of transition. CP wind shifts at 6Z from SW to E Soundings: W winds moving towards NW Similar drop in CPC T and RH increase near time of transition at SPL and CP

  9. Other Cases

  10. Other Cases

  11. Extra slide

  12. Soundings at 01 and 15Z show W winds Not much LWP SPL: T droping from -12 at 0Z to -15 at 7Z then steady through the rest of the case Drop in RH from 95 to 90 untill 7Z then steady at 90% to end.

  13. Decrease in CCN and CPC near the new day local (7Z)
